Color Study

I created a oil pastel drawing of a persons face and made it pixilated. I created a portrait that I cut out from a random magazine and then cropped down to minimize the negative (black) space. I used a 2H pencil to create my 1 by 1 centimeter boxes that covered the whole piece of paper. I the used multiple different color oil pastels to mix together square by square to make a different shade, tint, or color in every box. I used outlining and drawing in my project because I had to draw the tiny little boxes. I used burnishing to mix all of the different oil pastel colors I added to each box. To increase my composition I used color, space, value, and texture in my project. I used space in my piece by filling every box and not having any white spaces ora border. I used value when I mixed dark oil pastels with light or when I mixed dark to dark oil pastels, and light to light oil pastels. I used contrast, balance, and emphasis. I incorporated contrast when I made really dark squares and made really light (usually skin tone boxes) next to each other. I used balance by not having lots of dark boxes in one general space. And emphasis by blending the dark spaces together really well and placing them next to light boxes that were also blended really well. I was trying to make this piece look some what realistic while still completing the pixilated part of the assignment. The completed work makes me feel proud and happy because when i was in the process of making it it didn't really look like the start of the persons face, but I was surprised that it turned out really good, and better than I thought. By creating this project I learned that blending is a huge part of making the pixels come to life and that blending it well is important to have a completed project that exceeds your own expectations. In future pieces of art I want to make something pixilated that maybe has more personal meaning to me and less generic.. I added my own original style by choosing to do a portrait because its not something I enjoy doing without a motive.
