"Organ and Tissue Donation"

I wanted to paint something peaceful because the topic is pressing and timely and I thought that if I had a chaotic composition it wouldn't be very persuasive. this relates to my life because when I got my license I signed up to be an organ donor. I probably wouldn't have checked the box if I hadn't been educated in art class about what it is and why people should become organ donors.

The first thing I did was take a watercolor set and make a pretty pastel background that covered the whole page. Then I took black watercolor paint and added the trees on top of the starry night looking background. After that I traced out the letters in the sentence and colored them with yellow acrylic paint pens. I chose to make them yellow because I wanted it to look like dusk and I thought that the yellow would look better than just plain white. after I wrote the letters I outlined them in a fine point black pen to make them pop against the light background. Finally I took a thick sharpie and drew the lines of a puzzle over it to tie it into the slogan.

I didn't really experiment with the process that much, I knew what I wanted to do and what I wanted it to look like and it came out pretty much exactly how I was thinking. I think my project evolved when I went back in with more black watercolor paint and added more layers on top of the trees, which ultimately created highlights and shadows on the trees. I think my next step could be maybe adding lights to the trees or doing something to the background to make it more eye catching.
