My Ethiopia

Getting to see Family

This summer I travelled to visit family in Ethiopia. Every night we would get together in the living room, and the adults would drink coffee (which is what Ethiopia is known for) while the kids played games and ate popcorn.

Surprise! A taste of Philly in Ethiopia

There was this salon near my grandma’s house that was called Philly Beauty Salon, and we were so surprised when we saw it. The woman who owns it says that her husband is from Philly, and so when they moved back to the Ethiopia they thought they would bring piece of Philly with them when they opened their salon and barber shop.

Animals

This chicken caused so much trouble. When it wasn’t laying eggs it was scaring my little cousin and getting chased around by a bunch of kids.

These cats are so cute! My aunt had a cat who was pregnant, and out came these little kitties. Their mom was fierce, and she didn’t play when it came to her babies. We learned that the hard way after she chased us down when we picked them up.

So, in Ethiopia they don’t usually buy chicken from the store like we do here. They actually buy the chicken, slaughter it, and pluck the feathers off. Before my aunt could do any of this we decided that we wanted to hold the chicken. Their faces are hilarious.

Food

One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at was in Ethiopia. The place was small but the food was amazing. I only got to eat there once, but I loved it.

Now this is more traditional Ethiopian food. We have injera (top) which is the most common food there, and dorho (which is chicken cooked mainly with spices). We have samosas, rice cabbage, salad, spinach, and a lamb broth.

Now we all know this pizza place. They just recently opened two new places in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. The place was crowded even though it was expensive compared to other places with better prices. I don’t know why, but the pizza tasted way better in Ethiopia than it does here.

Traveling to the Countryside and the beach

I got to play with the monkeys and watch as my little cousin ran away from them crying.

We also had a little incident where a monkey came up to the table and took food from my sister’s plate while she was in the bathroom. (Good thing she was done because that monkey was hungry!)
