A Free and Fair World

Article 28, Universal Declaration of Human Rights

“Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.”

No matter our ethnic background, color of skin, where we live, how we live, our gender, or our goals now and in the future, we have the right and the freedom to do what we we want. Within certain boundaries, of course, we have the right to live fair and free without anyone “dictating” or stopping what we do. Sometimes in society a person of color can be turned away mainly because the color of their skin, but truly we have the right to be treated fairly.

Interview: Soccer makes the world Free and Fair!

“It's seen as something you earn rather then a privilege.”-Mathew Bermio

For my article I interviewed two Carver Alumni who have recently won a NACCP award playing soccer. Their names are Matthew Burmio and Alexis Hernandez and the attend Penn State Abington where both are in their third year. In this interview they answer questions pertaining to the freedom and joy that soccer brings them.

Short description of the players:

Mathew plays center-back and has played all three years of being in college.

Alexis has played center-back, right-back, left-back, center defensive mid and center-mid and has played two years out of the three years of being in college.

What exactly is it that you accomplished? Mathew: “So for our second year we went undefeated in our school history. We went 10-0 in our conference. We won our league and another tournament. With winning that we went to our first NACCP 3rd division Championship Tournament.”

What does the freedom of playing soccer mean to you? Alexis: “I'm just doing what I like doing. I was so happy when I tried out and made it, and now I have goals set up for next year.”

How has soccer affected your life? Alexis: “For me, I meet everyone I know through playing soccer. This has given me connections to people around the world. And it has help me communicate beyond just with people in my own bubble.”

Is there anyway Carver has impacted you playing soccer in college? Mathew: “Well let's talk about the differences first. You can play soccer here (at Carver) and it won't be the same as college because in high school you are playing mainly for recreational purposes, and it's not really a business. But in college it's not “for fun;” it's to compete business wise, and it's not taken lightly. It's serious, and there's no playing around. It’s seen as something you earn (in college) rather than a privilege.”

What message would you give to kids trying to “make it in soccer” ? Alexis: “Work hard; you can't be taking things lightly. You have to put in the work. There's no playing for fun, and you need to put your time in.”

Mathew: “Especially if you are trying to be professional. You have to wake up early, go work out in the gym, run your lapse, and do cardio.”

Both: “Yea just work hard, stay humble, and stay motivated.”

Latch and Carver Grads

“I'm just doing what I like doing. I was so happy when I tried out and made it, and now I have goals set up for next year.” - Alexis

You know there will always be people out there who will instantly put you down and not believe in you. But you are your own #1 advocate. You can do it !!! Stay humble and know your worth. Sure, other people can have opinions of what you're doing, but at the end of the day what makes you happy makes you happy, and that's all that truly matters. A free and fair world starts with all of us taking a risk, working hard, staying humble, and living the life we want to live!
