HIgh school: My Path to college

As a senior at Carver, college has been on my mind for four years. In 9th grade I knew that I was going to be in college in no time. But due to the fact I was overwhelmed by the fact I was in high school, I did not put as much effort or at least showed that I cared to do my work.

My sophomore year I was still playing around but I started to take my work more seriously after realizing how fast my freshman year went by.

My junior year I really got myself together. I took dual enrollment classes at CCP (community college of Philadelphia) and got my high school credits for English and 6 college credits. CCP made me realize the college was no joke.

Then came 12th grade. I was stressed out during the midst of my senior year. l worried about where I would go for college or if I even was going to go because I was procrastinating a lot; waiting until last minute to do everything. Thanks to the Journalism class at Carver, I stepped out of my comfort zone. I took advantage of many opportunities to speak with many journalists. I even got a chance to go and see Dr. Mona Hanna- Attisha speak at Friends Central School about her role as a pediatrician in bringing the Flint water crimes to national attention. Now I will be attending West Chester University in the fall. I will be majoring in pre-medicine but if push comes to shove, journalism will be a backup major, just in case!

What is the role of high school in our college preparations? What is the role of our own personality in our choice to attend college? For this article I have decided to interview two brothers who are Carver alumni. I interviewed Kyree Hence who graduated in 2016 and Kevon Hence who graduated in 2017. Kyree now attends Rosemont College and is finishing his junior year but his brother, Kevon, decided not to attend college right away. Same high school. Same family. Different outcomes. I asked them a few questions on why they chose to take these paths.

two brothers, two paths

Kyree Hence

What made you go to college?

I went to college because I knew I would need a degree to get a good job and actually focus on the specific job that I wanted. I knew there was more to learn and I knew going to college would help me experience more and open more doors for me

Why did you decide to become a RA?

I became a RA because I knew it would help grow my leadership skills. I wanted to play a bigger role on campus and being an RA would help display my strongest qualities and push me to try new things

Do you feel like college is necessary?

I do not feel like college is necessary but I do feel like it’s something that everybody should experience to see if it’s for you or not. There is a lot of things that you learn through life that you don’t learn in the classroom. I learned a lot just by meeting people and I feel like that’s something everybody should do. College isn’t for everybody because not everyone’s plans or dreams include it or require it, but there is a lot more to college than school work

Why did you decide to not attend college?

I didn’t go to school because college is overrated and is a trap, and you can literally accomplish so much without it.

Do you see college in your future?

Yes, I plan on going to college eventually but as of right now I know it is not for me.

Looking at these two boys responses, does this make you think about your future and what you may want to do? Everybody is different and is going to do their own thing. You may say one thing now, but by time your senior year comes you may have a different perspective. Anybody can go to college, it's just for you to decide whether it is for you or not. Of course, it is honorable for somebody to attend college but if your heart tells you that it is not for you, go with it.
