What is Online Learning?
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, virtual learning has become the new normal for students. Saul Carliner (2004) states, “online learning refers to learning and other supportive resources that are available through a computer.” (pg. 1). The materials that are carried out through online learning can be anywhere from taking a test to a teacher carrying out a full lesson over the computer to their students. Any subject has the potential to be taught online.
Negative and Positives Aspects of Online Learning
There are various advantages and disadvantages that come hand-in-hand with online learning. Let’s start with the advantages that online learning has to offer. Wayne Journell (2013) states that “There are, however, a number of reasons for teachers to consider moving a considerable portion of their curriculum online.” (pg. 4). Online learning allows students to access their assignments anywhere they are and anytime they want. It also can help students prepare for college, where many classes are offered online rather than in-person. Online learning also helps children perfect their technical skills as well. Now, let’s move on to some of the disadvantages that come with online learning. Online learning has the potential to cause students to feel isolated, this is due to the lack of communication with their peers. “Social isolation coupled with a lack of communication often leads to several mental health issues such as heightened stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts.” (Tamm, 2022). There are also a handful of students who may not have access to the internet, therefore, putting those students behind since they cannot do the online work. Online learning also allows for students to cheat more easily on tests or other assignments that teachers assign.

Conclusion
As stated in the beginning, online learning is becoming more common as time goes on, especially during the pandemic. I can see both sides of the argument that it can be beneficial as well as harmful. I have learned that it can allow students to work at their own pace as well as further their skills with technology. Alternatively, I learned that it can be harmful to their mental health and students are susceptible to falling behind. . Nora Fleming (2020) states, “Many students are struggling to adapt to remote learning”. I can agree with Nora because I was a substitute teacher during the pandemic and saw students struggle with online learning and the toll that it can have on them. Therefore, in my own opinion, I agree with the author that remote learning can do more harm than good to students.
