WHAT IS AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL?
Alternative schools provide a different way of learning to students who may not have been to successful in regular schools. An alternative school is an educational institution with an unconventional curriculum and methods. Alternative schools are not only for students with bad behavior but also for students being one or more years behind in credits, below grade level on testing, or having family problems. (Castleberry and Enger (1998))
Benefits of Alternative Schools
Alternative schools have smaller classroom sizes. This allows teachers to pay more attention to each student and cater to their needs.
With more time to devote to each student, teachers can individualize lesson plans and focus on the needs of each student.
In such schools, emphasis is on creativity and interaction, and teachers change strategies to see what works and what does not.

This is important to realize that every student may not thrive and be as successful as they can be in a regular classroom setting. Janie Ulmer is a member of the Edmentum Educator Network. In a talk about her first year of teaching, she focused more on the kids who were compliant, because she did not know what to do with the others. Janie Ulmer started a program in Indiana were all students who enroll meet with a licensed social worker to identify areas of concern before an academic plan is created. She also stated the importance of Alternative schools, not only for students, but for educators too by saying "When identifying and meeting the needs of students, students come first, then we, as educators, are able to move noncompliant students out of the hallways and back into the classroom where the learning occurs"(Ulmer, 2020).
Some students learn better in different environments. Alternative schools cater to students' needs that sometimes can not be met in public schools.
