Hi my name is Jaya Crews, and I was born in North Carolina. I am currently a sophomore attending ODU in hopes to become a teacher. I decided to come to Old Dominion University because of how diverse it was and also because it was in the city. I come from a small town where everyone knows everyone, and nothing really happens. I have a really big personality and love to meet new people so coming to ODU was a good choice for me. I LOVE star gazing; I think it is safe to say I am very fascinated when it comes to the sky. I also enjoy spending time outdoors. One of my favorite characteristics about myself is that I take pride in helping others. I feel like becoming a teacher is a great way to help others because an education is something that can never be taken away from you. I would like to teach 2nd or 3rd graders and maybe special ed as well.
I know that my brothers struggled in school because the school systems are not created to benefit all students. Knowing that every student does not have the same opportunity due to class, race, and parent involvement can help me teach my classmates about trying to create an equal opportunity for everyone in a classroom. Also, experiencing injustice in a classroom can make the student feel like they are not capable of learning which causes their performance to decrease. The last thing we want as teachers is to create biases in the classroom. I know that being a teacher comes with being open minded and not restricted to specific ways of thinking, teaching, and learning.
The biggest thing I hope to learn would be classroom management. I personally feel like if the classroom is out of control, you can’t expect the students to be able to learn. Having a good learning environment is a huge part of the learning experience. Also, behavioral management is something I would hope to learn as well because focusing on good behavior would reduce negative ones in the classroom.
I plan to be the teacher that makes every student feel safe. I want my students to be able to come to me about anything. Creating relationships with my students is something that I will strongly encourage in my classroom. I would also want my students to create relationships with each other. The educational philosophy that would best describe my views on teaching would be progressivism. I personally believe that students learn best when working with others.
I understand how you feel about classroom management. Unfortunately, no amount of classwork can prepare you for a class of rowdy kids. This can only come from practice. -Allison Gigante
Love to hear your inspiration behind what made you decide to become a teacher. Also, I agree that classroom managment can be scary. Luckily, we get to do trial and errror therough our obserbvations this semester. Remember your reason for becoming a teacher because it will be what motivates you during those trying times in the classroom. Overall, I loved how fluid your page is. Side Note, I am from North Carolina too!
It is interesting to see someone else recognize that the school system is not designed for every single student out there. Everyone learns differently, and sometimes the best way a kid can learn is not the mainstream. A teacher should be able to recognize this as a fact. Once a teacher does, they can then figure out another way for their student to learn if they are struggling. - Logan Munoz-Lawrence
Hey Jaya! I want to become a Kindergarden or 1st grade teacher. My step brother had a rough time in the school systems, specifically because he was an African American man (though a child at the time). I do agree that learning is not as effective in a out of control classroom. Having a safe classroom is very important to me so that the students can be comfortable with their peers and specifically their teacher. -Arlissa Williams
Hi Jaya! I'm sorry to hear that your brothers struggled in school, but I commend you for using this as a motivation to combat inequalities in the school system! I love the dark, starry background you chose for your page, it's unique and ties in your love for the sky perfectly! I also need to learn classroom management. Good lessons mean nothing when a classroom is out of control! Overall, great job! - Rachel Edge
It really is sad that we don't have equal allocation of proper materials and resources for ALL students regardless of their background. I admire your initiative to stand up to the injustices of our school system and I am positive you will be a massive, positive impact on many students. - Noah Shepherd
Jaya I also chose ODU because of the diverity! I didn;t want to limit myself based upon my suppoundings and expand my mind and be open to meeting new people withdifferent cultures. I feel as though becoming a teacher is more than just teaching as you said the children should feel safe! your going to do great in your future. ~ Janiyah Johnson
Hi Jaya! I loved reading your page and how honest and upfront you are about your brother's educational journey. As a teacher I also hope to create a safe environment for my students and give each of them the same opportunities to learn and become great students and people outside of the classroom. Best of luck to you this semester and during the rest of your time at ODU! - Ana Burmeister
Hello Jaya, Thank you for sharing your story with us it was really impactful for me. I agree with you that the school system is not set up as teachers may have a bias, and it may not help the students who are struggling. My older brother also had a lot of trouble socializing, and in all aspects of school work. As a first generation immigrant alot of the school work was depending on ourselves as our parents really could not help. It was difficult, and the school systems seemed like they really did not care (At least from my stand point). I wish for teachers like you who stand up for those students, and I know you will be a great teacher- Janny Kim
