Who am I?
I am Savannah Webb. I was raised in a two-parent household as an only child. My parents were/are the perfect depiction of a happy marriage. I believe that they have shown me so much about a healthy, happy marriage. I had many people throughout my childhood shape me into who I am today. I was fortunate enough to always have people behind me. My family is very close and we spend every holiday, birthday, super bowl game, and everything in-between together. My family played every positive role in my life, in shaping me into the women I am today. I have always been pushed to teach but I really felt the desire to become a teacher in high school. I just really felt like I had some great teachers during that time period and I wanted to do that myself, for others.

This is one of my favorite videos about Gentle Teaching.

What I Know:
I have recently started working at a daycare on campus. I have learned so much from working there in such a short time. One large thing, I believe to be the largest thing, is Gentle Teaching. I love the concept of Gentle Teaching and Gentle Parenting. I truly hope that I can help my classmates and future coworkers with this technique. I have also grown to really enjoy project based learning. I was apart of a new class is high school called "Teachers 4 Tomorrow." This class was completely based around Project Based Learning and how it benefits children so much. I hope to also spread my knowledge about that.
What I have to Learn:
I have so much to learn and that is so exciting. I have a lot of patience, naturally, for children but I know that, that is something that I really will continue to work on, and grow in. I also know that I will learn a lot of new things through new experiences and challenges throughout my college career. I came from a town where most of the students looked the same, there was not much diversity. This made it hard to really understand the full extent of the importance of being inclusive, to all students. I feel that is also another topic I will have to try and improve on.
The Teacher I will Become:
I believe that the purpose of school is to allow students to grow and educate themselves on who they are as members of society. Of course we all went/go to the school to receive an education and learn math, science, and english but I believe it is so much more. Some of the most important things my students will learn are the things I can not teach them. They will learn to love themselves and others, they will learn how to deal with different feelings and emotions. I can add the extra push or encouragement to understand themselves, but at the end of the day, that is on them. Personally, I learned all of these things by experience so I believe that is the most efficient way to learn these things, in particular. I hope to use Project Based Learning inside of my classroom. I hope this leaves them with educational experiences that they can use for the rest of their primary and secondary education. Personally, I think my students will value the outcome of each lesson, rather than the experience of the lesson. For example, some of the Project Based Learning assignments I did in high school were extremely challenging, but the outcome made it worth all of it. Obviously, I hope that my students interact with kindness towards each other but I will specifically teach them how important communication is with teachers and peers. This way they can let each other know when someone/something is bothering them rather than "tattling" to me. I believe that Progressivism is the teaching theory that best describes me. I want my students to learn based on their own doings, not from just what I lecture to them. When I think about myself as a teacher, the best word that comes to mind is, understanding. I have never been the best student and sometimes life is really hard, and for a child, it can be confusing when you are unaware of the feelings you are going through. That is why communication is so big for me now and in my future career. If a visitor walked into my classroom they would be a lot of motivation pictures and quotes. They would also see a lot of "toys" or activities that the students can fidget with.

Hey Savannah! I think Murphy is so adorable! I also think that gentle teaching is such an amazing style of teaching because it helps every student feel safe in a classroom. I hope to use this in my own classroom as well.
Savannah! I absolutely loved what you had to say about gentle teaching. Working in a Title I school as a teacher's assistant, I can see how gentle teaching would be a better route to go because sometimes they don't recieve gentleness at home. I also loved what you had to say about student's leading their education and that you touched on the use of fidgets. They are vital! - Amber Robbins
Hey Savannah! Your dog is very cute! I loved what you said about gentle teaching, it is so important to let your students feel like it is a safe environment that they're coming to everyday. I can't wait to see what you have to say throughout the semester! - Aidan Berens
