Who I am...
My name is Ana Burmeister, I'm 21 years old and I'm a junior here at ODU. I'm originally from Virginia Beach and have lived here my entire life with my younger brother, my mom and my 7 year old cat (my favorite family member)! When I'm not in school I'm spending time with my friends and family or at the Virginia Beach Sports Center where I coach travel volleyball.
This is my first semester at ODU, but prior to this I attended Campbell University where I was a pre-nursing student. I never thought I'd be a teacher because I didn't think I had the patience to work with children, especially younger students (K-2). However, growing up I began to work more with kids due to my job as a volleyball coach, and I truly realized I had a passion for wanting to help these kids learn a new skill and grow as players. When I transferred home to ODU for school, I decided to change paths along with that, I loved nursing but knew I wasn't going to be happy later in life. I made the switch to elementary education because of my drive and passion for working with students and seeing their success in what I'm teaching them.
I know how to actively listen to what students are telling or asking me and respond in a positive and constructive way.
I know how to make students feel comfortable in a setting that can be very intimidating. For many students, especially younger elementary students, this is the first true time they're away from their parents.
I know how to stay organized and I try to make myself lists of due dates and time frames for getting assignments and tasks done. I keep a physical and digital planner of my school, work, and personal tasks so no matter where I am I can access everything that's due. Growing up I used to procrastinate a lot in school and it wasn't until recently that I learned proper time management to make myself more successful.
This video truly keeps me inspired with why I'm going into the field of education.
I need to know how to create lesson plans for everyday, as well as substitute plans in case I miss class.
I need to know how to educate my students on controversial topics that may not always be comfortable to talk about.
I need to know how to keep my students engaged in our material.
I need to know how to teach my students in a way that allows everyone to get the most out of the lesson.
When I'm a teacher I will...
Make the classroom a safe place for my students
Always strive to better myself as an educator
Keep class engaging for everyone
Make sure my students are accepting of everyone in our class
Make my students feel more confident in themselves and their work ethic
I wasn't able to comment up there, so I had to add this. When doing my "teacher I will become" section, I had to sit back and put myself in the perspective of being in my own classroom with my own students and I also thought about how I want my students to feel like the classroom is their safe zone. I want everyone to always be comfortable because that is super important during those young ages! - Karsen Johnson
Hannah Scarbrough: I too am from the area I am from Chesapeake which is not far from Virginia Beach at all! I really liked what you said under what I need to learn about keeping students engaged. That is not something I initially thought about but it is such an important skill and I too need to learn how to effectively do that!
