My name Cassy Hixson, and I was born (2002) and raised in King William, Va. I have always been a school person. In high school, I was managing three different schools: King William High, Governor's School, and Rappahannock Community College. I soon graduated all three as valedictorian in spring of 2021. I currently reside with my boyfriend and dog (view picture below) in a small house. It has always been a dream of mine to become a teacher since I can remember. I absolutely knew this was my passion when I met one of my teachers in governor's school. I hope to be has strong, powerful, and considerate as her one day!
The biggest fact about teaching is students are the future of our world. As teachers, students look up to us for advice and guidance. Our relationships with the students can affect how their future plays out. I would want my future students to know that the best types of learning comes through mistakes and experience, so never become discourage.
Being a teacher allows for you to work all kinds of diversity. I have learned it our responsibility as teacher to learn about all of our students' backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This is an important part of making the classroom feel welcoming for all of your students. I understand that this is an important concept of including all of our students beliefs; however, I still need to learn how to do this effectively. I have a few ideas that will help me achieve connecting with all my students: accepting multiple answers correlating around experiences, having safe open discussions, and having get to know each other activities.
The purpose of school is to educate and give experiences to students. School should focus on expanding academics and social/civic skills. Students should be provided with essential knowledge and skills within the classroom. Along with skills that will teach students to participant in our society. I view myself as a teacher with a progressivism educational philosophy. It is important that students learn responsibility, communication, and problem solving while in school. Students will learn responsibility by coming to school prepared, ready to learn, and turning in work on time. Communication will be learned through open class discussions and small group activities with their peers. Lastly, problem solving will be learned through hands on activities, group work, trail and error, assignments, and assessments. My students will learning most of the curriculum interactively. I will interact with my students as a whole for main curriculum topic, and then I will interact on a smaller scale: small groups or even one on one. My classroom will be set up in a student centered style, so students can interact and learn with each other. Students will be able to experiment with ideas/thoughts in order to better understand the content. If someone enters my classroom, then I would be viewed as a compass guiding all my students in right path. My students will be viewed as sponges soaking up all the valuable information.
Cassy, three schools at once WOW! I also wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, I love working with kids and getting to see their excitement when they learn something new!
Going to three different schools and being valedictorian is super impressive! I like your student focused approach and enthusiasm about teaching. -hardy
I couldn't agree more with what you are saying. It is so important to be good role model for these young minds and building long lasting relationships with the students. School is a students second home and it is important for us to make them feel like they are at home. -Andrew
