About Me Authors Page TLED 301 SPRING 2022
My name is Sadie P. Hawkins, and I am from Stafford Virginia. I graduated from Colonial Forge High School in 2018 and went to the University of Mary Washington right out of high school then transferred to Germanna community College. I graduated with my AA in December of 2021 and now here I am doing ODU online majoring in Elementary Education. I used to play softball from the age of 4 to about 20 but when I was in high school, I had 3 knee surgeries (1 ACL repair and 2 meniscus repairs) and after playing my freshman year of college softball I decided it would be better to just lift weights. I am a major gym rat, and it is my therapy. I go roughly 4-5 days a week depending on how my body is feeling.
I have a dog named Frank and he is the most outgoing and precious thing is the world. I have a brother who is 18 about to be 19 who plays college baseball at St. Andrews University. I also have a boyfriend of 6 and a half years who plays college football at Chowan University. I love going on walks, listening to music, doing puzzles, being adventurous, I love going to new restaurants and getting food and so much more.
First and foremost as a teacher you never stop learning whether it’s material or your students. The world is constantly changing and education continues to evolve and so will your students. Developing a relationship with the students in my opinion is one of the most important aspects of becoming a teacher. It motivates them to want to learn and create maximal success.
To my future students:
I am your teacher but also your friend
not everyone will like you, one of my favorite quotes and will forever be my teaching moto is "You can be the juiciest peach in the world, but there will always be someone who doesn't like peaches"
You can always confide in me
Don't worry about the things you don't have control over
don't get mad at the results you didn't see with the work you didn't put in
do not let 5 seconds ruin the rest of your day.
To classmates & teachers/ instructors:
remember patience and being patient.
You are their teacher but also someone they respect and look up to
engaging your students will make your jobs less stressful and more fun and also increase classroom management
encourage all students to put there best foot forward and when they do and succeed, implement reward/ gratitude.
I know when I was younger, I personally struggled in school due to having eye issues, I saw double 50% of the time so basic tasks were a struggle for me sometimes so schoolwork wasn't even on my mind. I had such a hard time with reading and schoolwork due to this. Also, when my brother was younger, he had behavioral issues which influences his impact and classroom time. So as a teacher I want to make sure I am accommodating to all students no matter the issue or accommodation at hand.
As a teacher ill learn to be sure to address all cultures and implement them into lessons to make sure students know how important it is and that they are all valued. I’ll do my research along with questioning students to better my understanding as well not only will this help me grow as a person, but it will also improve my lessons. I’ll be sure to implement the different holidays and asks students to bring in show and tells to express their culture.
Need to learn:
All students will not understand the task at hand on the first try.
My students can teach me as I teach them
learn more about are cultures and different backgrounds knowing where your students come from and their values can make teaching a lot easier and more effective
lesson plans and curriculums make me nervous but I am hoping to get the hang of them soon
classroom management and students behavior are linked
Some things I believe really shaped my thinking behind wanting to become a teacher would be my influence going through school. Growing up I paid close attention to my teachers, I really enjoyed creating that close teacher student bond where I felt comfortable enough to tell them almost anything and as a teacher that is one of my top priorities is to ensure my students know my classroom is a safe spot for any information they feel comfortable sharing. I am a very free spirited and carefree person. I believe that things come your way when they decide to enter your life and you cant rush anything. I worked at a daycare from the age of 16-20 so I have been around a wide variety of kids but they all have one thing in common, they are all so funny. I am on of those people who find most things funny and I am very outgoing and so are kids. Kids are the funniest people and when I hear or see a kid/ child do something funny/ creative/ something without thought always makes me laugh and look forward to having my own classroom. I am a very active person so implementing fitness/ health and exercise into my students daily routine in the classroom is a very important deal for me but at the same time I Understand that some students do not enjoy or participate in physical activity outside of school but making sure it is interactive and fun will create a liking and good habits for health and fitness.
I believe school is a place where students come and increase there knowledge as well as there skills so prepare them for their future and the real world, I also believe school is a place where students can truly figure out who the are, what they enjoy, who whey enjoy, where they can create bonds that will never be broken. As a teacher my students will learn in my classroom through experiences and individuals will be kindness, handwork, empathy, agility, accountability, communication, imagination and so much more.
A philosophy that I believe would be very effective in my classroom would be pragmatism and this explains that knowledge is learned through experiences and we allow for new skills that allow for better understanding of the outside world through trial and error. Also another philosophy that I believe would be quite effective in my classroom would be one where the student and teacher learn from one another through constant feedback between the two.
One word to define me as a teacher would be: courageous/ outgoing
One word to define my students would be: fearless
