My name is Rachel Sapp. I am a Senior at Old Dominion University majoring Elementary Education with a minor in History. The person I am today was shaped by years and years of self-reliance and overcoming a multitude of obstacles to bring me to my true purpose. I have been lucky to have learned from a variety of people and cultures throughout my life that allowed me to value differing opinions and cultural experiences. I felt called to teaching in Kindergarten. There was never a doubt in my mind that teaching was my end goal, even at five years old. Despite gaining experience in different industries, teaching has always felt like home.
I am very good at understanding different points of view and empathizing with others. I am very comfortable teaching reading and literacy skills. I have ample experience in modifying lessons or routines to meet the needs of students with Autism. I am experienced in creating effective cross curriculum lessons. I know how to make students feel supported while held to an achievable standard.
For students, I often teach and encourage effective conflict resolution skills. I frequently teach my students about the importance of mental health and managing big feelings in a healthy way.
I would like to learn more about time management when teaching lessons. I would also like to learn more about creating an inclusive environment for every student. Additionally, I would love to learn how to further support and protect marginalized students. Finally, I would like to learn about how to balance the discussion of creationsim vs evolution when teaching science.
Through these pursuits, I will become a more inclusive, respectful, and punctual teacher. I will challenge myself to meet these expectations through research and opening up a dialogue with members of marginalized communities in order to learn how to best support their members.
I believe the purpose of school is found in the social and civic responsibility of the school -- to help children learn and grow to be functioning humans. In my classroom, the most import thing my students will learn is how to take care of themselves. This will be achieved via mental health practices and coping mechanisms. My students will learn these skills via the dedicated time set aside for this skillset. For example, students may find meditation to be very beneficial when practiced daily. I would hope my students would value honesty, kindness, and understanding in my classroom. I will nurture my students while providing healthy boundaries and encouraging them to grow to their full potential. I believe my personal philosophy falls between progressivism and essentialism. One word to describe me as a teacher would be "nurturing." If a visitor walked into my classroom, they would see clear expectations around the room, an area to show off student work, pods of students to encourage collaboration, and a cozy "cool down" corner for when big feelings overwhelm them.
I love the title on your comment section - The Office is the best! I also agree that an important part of school is to teach children how to truly function in society. These younger years are so crucial because we as teachers are able to help mold them into great humans and future leaders!

You have a great presentation of your work. I like how you stated that your background allowed you to become familiar with various cultural backgrounds and also that you stated you want to have an inclusive environment in your classroom. I believe this is important for children so that they feel it is a safe place for them. - Victoria Beasley
