What is Anti-Racist teaching?
For many teachers and educators, teaching through an anti-racist lens means helping students understand racism's orgins. It is the excercise of hope and the practice of undoing and dismantling systems of opression. ( Alvarez, 2021 )
This means going beyond inclusive teaching strategies and to consider which voices are heard, who counts as an authority and what kinds of thoughts/beliefs are valued in the classroom.
( Wheaton College, 2022 )
Why is anti-racist teaching necessary in the classroom?
As educators, we must acknowledge that the events of our society impact the practice, activities and overall atmosphere of the classroom.
Students come in from all different backgrounds with knowledge and experiences that are rooted to real life.
As teachers we must be reflective and responsive enough to create space for this knowledge. We must connect real world experiences to lessons in the classroom. Students must know that what they experience outside the classroom has value and purpose inside the classroom as well.
( Alvarez, 2021 )
Here are some examples of books that discuss the topic of race that you could include in your classroom.
Anti racist teaching in all schools is essential. The change has to start somewhere. Both students and educators need to be aware of world problems. Anti-racist educators undrstand that their role as teachers, leaders, care givers and or policy makers are roles of great privilege and power.
They also understand the constant need to learn. They must believe in the power of building and maintaining a critical consciouness. This comes from reading, studying, listening observing and then implementing. This also comes from humility and engaging with others. (Otis College LibGuides, 2009)
Educators in the United States who are seeking to be anti racist, have to acknowledge the past and recognize that this country was built upon racist principles. They must also know how to identify racism, how racism is carried out and how people hold, sustain, maintain and perpetuate racism.
