Logan Munoz-Lawrence
I am Logan Munoz-Lawrence. I am a male and 20 years old. I am a native of Hampton Roads and have lived here most of my life. Though I have lived in other states. Most notably Springfield Missouri. I am someone who has been shaped by the internet. It has shaped my interest, belief system, and my persona. It has even influenced my reasoning for being in college. While my high school teachers did have an effect on me, Youtube history channels (like History Civilis , Kings and Generals , Overly Sarcastic Productions , and many more) had a greater effect. Since it was those channels that I binged watched throughout middle school and high school.
While YouTube is the biggest influence on my career choice, It would be wrong for me to not mention my presentation on the Rwandan Genocide during my senior year. The project required me to teach a subject to the class. I choose to do it on the Rwandan Genocide. I loved teaching the story of it to the class, despite the depressing overtone. This project helped me decided what history job I would choose (teaching). The YouTube link above is a trailer to the Movie Hotel Rwanda, which is an accurate portray of the Rwandan Genocide.
Foxes are my favorite animal, if you couldn't tell. The one above and the barrier images are called melanistic foxes.
Fennec goes :D
The world is a very complex place. Knowing that is key. Not everyone can understand the same thing as one another. There are many languages, government systems, personal beliefs, and so many more differences that shape us. This is something I can teach other classmates and students. No matter how much we will try as teachers, their are still going to be students and fellow coworkers who cannot grasp the same understand as us.
A lot has to be know to becoming a teacher. Perhaps the 2 most important aspects is knowing exactly how to teach and knowing the material you are teaching. This is only my first teaching class at ODU. So, I still do not have the skills to walk in front of a bunch of teenagers and be an effective teacher. I also still do not know all the information I will teach as a history teacher. Since I am still learning history at ODU too.
I also still need to learn minor aspects of a teaching job too. One example of this is time management. I need to learn how to organize my time behind the scenes in respect to grading papers, dealing with parents, creating lesson plans, etc.
All of this I will learn over time. While doing so, I will try to find more than one way to do my job so that I can most effectively reach my students.
What I have to learn. Part 2
While I have lived in VA most of my life, I did not live here during my high school years. So because of that, I feel like I lack some basic knowledge on how the Virginian school system is different from the rest of America. One example are the SOLs. While I did take them during elementary and middle school, I do not have any experience with them in high school as Missouri does not have any SOLs.
I believe that the purpose of school is to teach the future generation knowledge that will help them navigate society. This falls inline with the Social & Civic philosophy of teaching. For my students, that will be the history of the world and the nation. My classroom would mainly be teacher centered. Since I am a story teller, telling the story of history. But I do see the value of having some student centered projects. Which I will have every now and again. I would hope that in the future these projects will be sinlge projects. Since when I was a student I lamented group projects. But I will allow my students to help each other out often enough if they please. I hope my future studentd enjoy my work as a teacher and that when a visitor comes in, they see students either happily working on a project or cheerfully listening to me talk.

This page was great! I agree with what you believe the prupose of school to be. I like to think I would be student centered but I feel my approach would most likely be teacher centered. -Katie Stottlemyer
Hi! I love the theme of your author page! I like that you mentioned the diversity and complexity in the world we live in. It is so important to understand that no everyone has the same background. It's our job as future teachers to help students become more aware and understanding of the world and different cultures around them. - Samantha Young
Great page Logan! One of the most important things we can do as teachers is help students be diverse in cultural knowledge, and that everyone comes from a different culture. As well as the ability to use the information in everyday life. Also I love the fennec! Nice job! - Sam Johnson
I am Malia it is nice to meet you Logan. I love the theme of your page!! My plan is to teaching high school history. I am so happy to know I am not the only one who enjoys watching History videos on YouTube. I also favor the teacher centered style, I think it might have to do with the subject we plan to teach. -Malia Ancheta
