Who Am I?
My name is Aidan Berens! I am 19 and I was born in Virginia Beach and lived there up until I moved on campus here in Norfolk. I'm in my sophomore year here and my major is Elementary Education with a minor in theatre, with my major I'd like to tech second or third grade and maybe even start an after school theatre program wherever I teach. When I'm not doing school work or working I like to play guitar with my friends and be outdoors.
Who Influences Me?
My biggest influence in pursuing a career in education is definitley my mom, she was a special ed teacher for 17+ years and just recently became a librarian at an elementary school! She always suggested teaching but I never truly took it into consideration until my senior year of highschool. Some other strong influences came throughout my general education over the years and I keep in contact with many of them!
What I Know!
I know how to encourage students to "think outside the box"
I can be an active listener for my students and respond in a way that helps or answers their questions
I know that some teaching techniques may not work for all students
What do I need to learn?
I need to learn how to teach as effectively as possible for my group of students
I should learn to manage my classroom
I need to learn how best to create lesson plans that are engaging and fun for students that still get the lessons across
The Teacher I Will Become
I find that it always quite rare in the younger grades, such as second or third, to see a male teacher. I feel that it is important for students to have the opportunity to have a positive male role model in their lives when in this time it is unfortunately rare to find in the household. If I as a male teacher can connect with my students and give them that healthy example that they could otherwise miss out on I want to be able to be there for them. Education for me has always been very important and I learn even better when I feel I can connect with my teachers or professors, especially when I felt as though there was a mutual respect and I hope to bring that to the children that come into my classroom and I can give them that safespace to go to during the school day when they might feel they do not have that at home.
Fun Facts About Me!
I absolutely love music, I listen to music for the majority of most days other than when I'm in classes. Some of my favorite artists include John Mayer, Grateful Dead, and Amine. I also play guitar, I've played for about 7-8 years now and I even used to perform gigs at places like Eagles Nest and Shakas. And I drive a 1973 ford Maverick that me and my dad built the engine for!

Hi Aiden! I found it really interesting that you made a point of mentioning that you wish to be a positive male role model for your students. The common stereotype for teachers is that we're all women, so I'm very happy that you want to be that male support for your students! I also like that you want to be a positive example, I think that's what we're all after in being aspiring educators! - Sami Lewis
