Who Is Horace Mann?
Horace Mann was born in 1796 in Massachusetts and was known as the "Father of Common School." He grew up in an environment overcome by poverty and didn't get the greatest education until he taught himself. He woud teach himself at the library in his hometown. He was then accepted to Brown University and did amazing things there. He decided to go into law and landed himself a spot in the house of representatives after his time in law school. He then went on to be apart of the massachusetts senate as president. He achieved many great things while working in government but his passion was education reform. He always believed in equal education for all and that education was one of the most important things anyone could have. A major example of his education reform was him starting the common school movement. This allowed for every child to get a simple education that was funded by local taxes.
Why Does He Matter?
After Reading his Biography you are probably wondering why he is so important to american education today. Horace Mann was one of the first advocates for public education. He wanted education to be free to all so that kids who grew up in poverty like him still had access to a good education. He created an education reform which helped students get a better education. He played a big role in the opening of teacher training institutes to have teachers that know what they are doing unlike his teachers growing up. Without him we may not have the ducation systems we have today. he wanted education to be accessible to all no matter their family income or there personal background.
Conclusion
In Conclusion, Horace Mann was the "Father of common school" and believed strongly in education reform. He believed education should be equal and that every child should have access to a baic education for free. He worked in the house of representative and in the senate for massachusetts. He is ectremely important to this course becuase he is part of the reason that students are able to get free public education today. He created an education reform to allow students to get basic education by local tax dollars.
