Who am I:
I’m Hannah Scarbrough and I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore this year at ODU with a major in elementary education and a minor in sociology. I am from Chesapeake, Virginia, and just recently moved to downtown Norfolk. I am a big sister to 2 brothers and one sister. I have a 16-year-old brother Jack who is the kindest, most giving person you will ever meet. Then comes Will who is 11 and is a little crazy but is the first one to protect his sisters. Then there is my 9-year-old sister Maddie who is truly my best friend. She is the best surprise I ever got! My parents had me young but have worked so hard to give my siblings and I everything we could ever need or want and for that I will forever be grateful! I got a puppy about a year ago now and she is the best dog I could ever ask for. Her name is Lady and she is a Goldendoodle mix! Some things I love doing are going hiking, traveling to new places, and baking.
My Inspiration:
My mom is a preschool teacher so I have been lucky enough to teach summer programs at her school and be a substitute when teachers are out. I would say that working at her school made me 100% sure I wanted to teach but my siblings are my core reason for picking this profession. My sister got diagnosed with dyslexia a couple of years ago and her teacher thought she just wasn’t “smart” enough or at the same level as all the other kids. Once we finally got a diagnosis she was put with another teacher who has not only helped my sister tremendously but has made it so that she is on one of the highest levels of reading for her age group! So she is the reason I want to teach so I can help kids just like her and never have to see a child think they aren't smart enough ever again!
What I know:
I might not know tons about how to create effective lesson plans and so many other things that I will have to do as a teacher but what I do know is that I love kids so much and want to shape them into the best version of themselves and help them make a difference! I know a lot about how to teach letters, sight words, counting, and so much more from teaching preschool which I know will help me a lot along the way. Most of my experience in education is 3-4-year-olds which is an age that I adore. I of course want to teach my future students the basics but I also find it so important to teach kids how to love themselves, be effective communicators, help others who need it, and so many other life skills that aren’t taught in a standard curriculum.
The teacher I will become:
I want to be the teacher that students feel comfortable and safe with and know they can come to me with anything.I love the idea of me being a garden and my students are all the flowers in the garden that grows bigger and stronger every day! I believe that while school is meant for learning your standard topics it should also be a place where children learn basic life skills such as making friends, communicating effectively, learning how to manage their feelings, and so many other life skills that are not taught in school. I want my lessons to be as interactive as possible. I have found that younger kids like to constantly be doing something so I want to add “play” into my learning style. I also believe that lots of people are not good test takers so I would like to implement more in-class projects that become test grades over your standard paper-multiple choice test. Group work will also be a key component in my classroom. Not only will my students be doing the assignment I gave them but they will also be learning how to communicate and work with their peers. With all of that being said I would say that my teaching style will be a mix of social reconstructionism and progressivism.
