My name is Maria Brown and I am currently a junior. I am majoring in elementary education. I am originally from Perú and my first language is Spanish. I moved to the states in December of 2009. Moving to the states not knowing English made it hard for me to do well in school. I had a translator, but that was not very helpful. Some of my teachers would know English was second language and they would stop for a minute so I could catch up. Throughout the years I got better in understanding of how teachers taught in classes. After two years I stopped having a translator. I started babysitting when I was 12 years old. After a couple of years of babysitting I knew I wanted to do something with kids. I still have trouble with my english, but not as much as I did.
I know how to successfully answer and listen.
I know how to educate kids to be modest and listen effectively.
I know how to handle kids with English being as their second language.
I know how to make learning enjoyable for children.
I know not all students are thought the same way.
I know that not all teaching methods are effective for all students.

Classroom management
The teacher that I hope to become is one that students are comfortable talking to me. The purpose of school is so kids could learn and use what they've learn in the future purposes. Also, I think that the objective of education is to give opportunity for children to grow into healthy, confident adults who are prepared to achieve their full potential. They should understand that I am an adult who cares about them and can be trusted with any information they choose to share with me. I'd like kids to collaborate and think critically with one another, allowing them to bring out the best in themselves and their classmates. I'd also like to encourage students in understanding their own learning styles.
Two educational philosophies that I believe that describes teaching would social reconstructionism and progressivism. I consider myself to be a nice, passionate, and courteous person. It is our responsibility as teachers to inspire and encourage our students. For me, being hands-on is a fantastic way to learn. When there is something entertaining going on, students are more interested in learning. I want my kids to have a diverse range of educational experiences that they will be able to apply in the future.
I'm so excited that you are from Peru. It's a place I haven't been but always wanted to go. Maybe I can ask you about it after class one day. --Dr. Kidd
Hi Maria, I also had trouble with English when I first came here. I could read and write English just fine, but having conversations with other people was difficult. Glad to meet you! -Michael Daley
Hey Maria, I love Peruvian food, and I hope I am able to travel there one day, it seems like a beautiful country. Also, I love and agree with your point that not all teaching methods work for all students. -Ivy Powell
Hey Maria, I think it is great that you had teacher that would work with you when you first got here because being a patient with your students is crucial when you become a teacher, especially with the younger kids. I also think that you knowing Spanish can also be a big help with kids that English is there second language and I am trying to learn Spanish too so one day I might be able to teacher English in Spain.-Isaiah Allen
