What I know: What my experience with knowledge is that its not something a person "knows". In my opinion, it is more about experience. We can say we "know" something but just when we actually "know" than its changes and we really do not know.
For example, the lattice strategy for multiplication was how my now 6th grader learned but when I learned multiplication it was the traditional method. Also, My kids learned various techniques for memorizing single digit numbers using their fingers while I learned only by flash card and memorization.
What I can teach my classmates to become better teachers is really one thing: Be open minded. Their are so many paths when becoming a teacher you have to be open to find style of teaching, your style of communicating and what makes you be a successful teacher.
Finally, what can I teach my students to help them become a better person?
First of all, I never want to change a student- who they are personality wise, however I would like to teach kindergarten or first grade because they are very impressionable at this age, and I get to teach they things that are very humbling through things like social stories that will help shape them into amazing leaders in their school, community and life.
The type of teacher I will become is more in line of a social reconstructivism philosophy.
What is the purpose of school?
The purpose of school is to gain knowledge of both the past and the present. While the world is changing all the time, I think it is important to embrace our past histories and learn from it. This is really the only way to learn and change the world and peoples ways of thinking.
How will the students learn?
My students will learn in many different ways. They will learn by book, video, research and hands on. There is no one way to learn.
What types of educational experiences will you provide?
My class will not just be teacher driven but rather student driven and teacher guided. All students need to learn and they do need guidance but they also need to realize that their voice needs to be heard as well.
What will your students values be?
My students will follow the PBIS because I feel it will build strong individuals to shape what our world needs. I will interact with my students in a positive approach and giving them positive reinforcement. While I cant force all of my students to interact with one another all the time, I will help instill values of equality and that all students are the same no matter the difference between one another.
In what one word describes me as a teacher? Tenacious
In what one word describes my students? Scholarly
If a visitor walked into your classroom, what would they see? MLK, he had a dream and that dream is what I want my students to see. No separation and more equality. MLK wanted anyone who would stand beside him and to walk that walk and next to him to show brother and sisterhood.
Comments:
Paige Hawthorne- I really enjoy the question and answer format that you have throughout your page. I also love your comment about experience instead of knowledge. I think it is important to highlight your experiences more than just some things you may know.
I agree with Paige that the question/answer format was a great idea for your page because it allows for a clear understanding to why you are saying what you are. I couldn't agree more that it is so important for students to not only learn about the history of the world around them, but to be prepared for what could come ahead! - Karsen Johnson
Hello, I also want to be a first grade teacher because of how impressionable they are at that age. I love the idea that the student is self sufficient but still needs me and looks to me for help.I really enjoyed your page!- Katie Stottlemyer
Hello Katherine! I really enjoyed your "What I Know" section, as I also stated in mine that what I know is that there is so much that I don't know! I also feel that it is important to teach students that there is so much they have to learn as well, and that keeping an open mind will help them process it. I also like how you said your teaching style will be student driven and teacher guided, as I feel that is the perfect way to put how students should learn today. Good luck this semester and I know you will become a fantastic teacher! - Cargen Taylor
