Biology is an introductory level biology course which uses both laboratory and classroom approaches. Emphasis is placed on using the scientific method to understand and solve problems. Topics studied include cell theory, biochemistry, plants and photosynthesis, taxonomy and adaptation, disease, genetics, ecology, and theories of evolution. The acquisition of basic facts necessary for the understanding and mastery of scientific skills and concepts is stressed. This is accomplished through active laboratory participation, classroom lectures and discussions, reading, and research. The development and further refinement of skills such as observation, data collection, record keeping, equipment manipulation, the construction and use of graphs and tables, general problem solving, and conclusion writing are heavily stressed. This course will emphasize the 10th grade content standards.
