Read Online and Download After Dark: Poems about Nocturnal Animals by David L. Harrison,Stephanie Laberis. This collection of twenty-two poems explores the fascinating lives of North American nocturnal animals. When the sun goes down, many animals come out. Crickets chirp their crickety song hoping to attract a mate. Cougars bury their leftovers for later, leaving few clues for others to follow. Armadillos emerge from their dens to dig for worms, leaving holes in the lawns they disturb. This collection of poetry from acclaimed children's author and poet David L. Harrison explores the lives of animals who are awake after dark. Stephanie Laberis's beautifully atmospheric illustrations will draw in readers, and extensive back matter offers more information about each animal.
Fantastic book for kids, clever and entertaining poems by David L. Harrison and wonderful illustrations by Stephanie Lebaris. A fun and educational book that kids will enjoy over and over. My 4 year-old grandson loves it.
Once again, author David L. Harrison and illustrator Stephanie Laberis have joined forces to create a magical, non-fiction book about animals and other creatures that slink and slither in the night! I've shared several of these poems with 3rd grade students, and they loved them...especially the boys. Kids are just naturally curious about things that wander in the dark while they're safely asleep in bed, and David's poems delivered the answers to their questions! What a great opportunity to snuggle and read these poems, before stepping out into the night together and maybe glimpse or hear one of the creatures from the book!
Harrison's poetry - in varied styles and forms - is fun and enlightening, but never didactic. Laberis does a fantastic job of maintaining the nocturnal mood while still keeping the subjects bright and intriguing. A perfect book for nature loving kids!
