If there’s one thing I know, it’s that you should always WEAR CHAINMAIL TO THE APOCALYPSE. Tom the Copywriter (definitely not an avatar for the author who also happens to be a copywriter) joins a group of knights from a dinner-and-joust theatre company (definitely not a knock off of some other well known Medieval Times™ entertainment venue). They travel in search of a better life. But obviously, it wouldn’t be a story, if it were easy. Diseased hordes! Guns! Swords! Packs of angry abandoned house pets! Overly researched details about horseback riding! Creepy retail outlets! Small towns! Thoughtful commentary about the world we knew! A plot-relevant chicken!Read the book that the author's mom described as "interesting and funny in a weird way" — and that his dad couldn't finish because "too many characters died." With so many apocalypses to choose from, don't settle for cheap, imitation apocalypses.

The Beginning of the EndI'm not great at writing reviews. Products, maybe. Something works or it doesn't. Or somewhere in between. I don't think that works with literature.That said, these books work. A trilogy of books that, all together, become a short novel. I'm not sure why they are broken up that way, but I like it. For someone who doesn't properly utilize the immense amount of "free" time that I have (even pre-Coronavirus!), these books felt like something I could easily do. It's easy for me to start a book, get distracted by other things in life and suddenly a month has passed and I feel like I need to start the book over. So I like the way these are broken up.I started these when Covid-19 was just starting to make its presence known, and the hints of future problems were beginning to revel themselves. Finished it in lockdown (in Dallas, Texas, which is where the book spends considerable time). Took me a couple of weeks to get to this review. (See Free Time, above.)So I have now written more about me than I could ever write about the book, but I really enjoyed these. The timing on them was perfect, though the author had no idea (or did he?), and Covid-19 is definitely not the Apocalypse (at least as the time of this writing).The cast is great: Zombies! Damsels in distress who take no guff! Ren-faire/Medieval times cast members! Office workers! A chicken! It has a journey. There are dangers, without and within. Humor - at least things I found humorous.Anyhoo, I liked this little trilogy. You should pick it up. Read it. If you have read this far in my review, you clearly have the time and skill to take the challenge on. I enjoyed it, I think you will too.

This could just as easily been a clever commentary on modern life with really interesting characters and witty, on-point dialog. But it's not. It's all that with the addition of pandemics, moral conflict, zombie beheadings, and several main-character casualties.Just as with his short story collection, We Miss All the Great Parties, it is clear that David cares deeply about his characters. It's just that this time he's not afraid to have some of them have their faces eaten off by zombie hoards.This series is somehow a delicious soup of Douglas Coupland, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, and Stephen King. Read it now, during our current pandemic crisis, for extra flavor.

Loved reading all 3 books! I would suggest downloading all 3 books at once. You don't want to stop and wait for your device to download to find out what happens next! The blend of personalities that come together for the trek through Texas is well crafted. The narrator is a dry witty everyday kind of guy who makes you question what the average person would do in an apocalypse. Would you hide or become a hero? What skills do you have that would help you survive? I hope I never have to find out! Even with the devastation of the apocalypse happening, David throws in side-trips that make it lighthearted and allows the character (and reader) a chance to step outside of the horror of the events that are happening. Who would think of going to look at art during the apocalypse?!?! As someone who loves art, I really enjoyed reading this part! It had me asking myself which painting in a museum I might want to get up close and personal with now that no one is around to stop me from touching art! And then there’s the chicken! I love the addition of the random chicken! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I would rather have it as 1 book instead of 3.

If you cant get enough of various apocalypse stories, this one's for you.The dry humor outlook of the protagonist breaks the standard tropes we expect when zombies show up to ruin the world. Even though the characters are only just being introduced (this is pt 1 of 3), you can see their potential for development. They feel like people you know.Finally, Hopkins provides us with fantastic interludes (probably my favotire part) which attempt to explain pre-apocalypse concepts like social media and exercising for fun to a post apocalypse audience. They provide a wonderful way to include social commentary, even after the world falls apart.Now to crack open part 2!

I am not typically a fan of apocalyptic fiction, but this is a fantastic novella (the first of three parts). If you do anything, read the first chapter: it's a perfect example of how well Hopkins can blend different tones and moods while hooking readers. He has an ability to turn subtle, human gestures into gut punches, and they are used sparingly, but with panache, throughout. Do yourself a favor and read this!
