An interesting volume for those wishing to delve into Disneyland Park's earliest Cast Member's before they we're actually called "a Cast"! As a collector of Park history and then only of books that are strictly of the original park in Anaheim, this was a delightful and fun read. I currently have approximately 330 books in my personal Disneyland library, and I can honestly say my shelves would be missing something special had I not ordered this one. It is one of the most important records you could ever add to your Disneyland library! It may seem outwardly like a High School annual albeit a high-end annual, but it is in it's content where the comparison falls apart.My first thought after reading the book was that it portrayed a special time from the 1950's forward. By all outward appearances this was a community not unlike those existing on the outside of Disneyland's berm in the 1950's. The many Black & White photographs portray some very special people doing their jobs with smiles, and those smiles appeared more genuine than the quick shots of today. Perhaps it was just that much simpler time of the 50's. One couldn't help but feel that both Disney Brothers chose the right time in history as well as the right people to build a legendary attraction of world renown. Most photographs seem to tell an additional hidden story as one would find it very easy to imagine, not only happenings in their work but also in their friendships with each other. Disneyland's early years seemed much more of a "Community" within a small town. With some regret it would begin to change in just a few short years and start to evolve into something else more akin to today's themed park.Now while the actual volume is put together like a quality book with blue covered boards and glued registers you should not expect any color as of course all of these heretofore unavailable photographs are all Black and White! The medium weight glossy paper stock is perfect and the chosen font is kept simple and clear to the eyes.As an amateur historian I found myself searching and unable to find interviews with some of my favorite 55er's but of course many we're either unavailable, unreceptive or myriad of other possibilities so I'll cut Mr. Koenig some slack in that regard!Pick one up if you can.

Disneyland is a city. Cities are people. David Koenig’s latest book, “The 55ers,” documents the people who built and ran that experimental city called Disneyland. Experimental it was—pioneering unexplored entertainment territory. Every day at Disneyland was an adventure beginning with the adventure of turning orange groves into something Walt called a “theme park.”The book is organized into areas: the Groves (before Disneyland existed), Town Square, Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Each section has a perfusion of period black and white photos and extensive sidebars giving a thumbnail biography of the people populating Disneyland. Both construction and behind-the-scenes flesh out the city—and its city politics.Some personalities merited their own chapters. Trinidad had a rather crappy—but necessary—job: emissions control! Main Street had some horse-powered vehicles. These horses reminded guests why the automobile was popular—even green energy pollutes. If someone didn’t sweep up the road apples left by horses, it would quickly get deep! K7 the Spaceman was so popular that after Kaiser Aluminum left the park the character remained—with a slight costume change. Black Bart and Marshall Lucky went beyond their roles and were featured in “People and Places: Disneyland, USA” of 1956.There were significant changes the first year. Disneyland started with pay toilets—gone. Good riddance! There used to be a park newspaper called “The Disneyland News:” stopped publication in 1957. Initially, Disneyland’s security was provided by the Burns Detective Agency—changed because in-house security is more appropriate than contract security. The Davy Crockett Frontier Museum featured an exhibit of vintage firearms, sponsored by the National Rifle Association—in 1956 the museum into an arcade and shopping venue. The behind-the-scenes changes were invisible and at least as substantial. For a while, Wardrobe and the dressing rooms were little more than sheets of plywood leaning against the Roundhouse. First Aid changed locations, from a second story office above Main Street to its present bit of real estate. Finance was at first crammed into a make-shift lean-to tacked onto the Administration Building. Dubbed “the Snake Pit,” 22 accountants were crammed inside and lack of insulation made it sweltering in summer heat, drafty in cool weather, and frequently flooded. A new (but still basic) “Corrugated Castle” and replacing outdated NCR accounting machines with electronic IBM data processing undoubtedly saved Disneyland time, money and much frustration—even though at first the only air conditioning was for the IBM equipment. Electronics don’t handle heat, dirt and moisture well. Everything was new and untried. What worked, stayed. If it could be improved, it was. Some things didn’t work and were gone.This is a coffee table size book. Disneyland of 1955 was in a different world. Ride the adventure of the past. Ride it again!

Congratulations Mr. Koenig on yet another fantastic primary source. Those of us who study Disneyland and places like it are forever in your debt. It takes years to conduct this many first-person interviews, and scholars are all the richer for it. I found the information on construction and maintenance—especially landscaping—to include facts and quotes I have not found anywhere else. Kudos and THANK YOU.

Really not a narrative book. It’s mostly just people that worked at the park and a short bio on them. It’s really just a nice coffee table book that you quickly skim through, you don’t really read it. It’s also quite pricy for the content provided, should be more like $20.

This is a fantastic book about the history of Disneyland from the people who were there at the start. David Koenig is a really great author and expert on the subject of Disneyland. His books "Mouse Tails" are fantastic. As a Disneyland collector and fan, this book was a must for my collection. You cannot go wrong purchasing this book.
