Read Online and Download Michigan County Atlas-4th Edition by David M. Brown. Updated Cartography & Now with ALL Counties Included! The Michigan County Atlas is the best single resource available for exploring the State of Michigan and all it has to offer. This 220-page resource has been 30 years in the making and is the only Atlas that covers each Michigan County as an individual entity. The information provided for each County includes: indexing for county roads, hydrology, and place names. Complete information for outside boundaries of neighboring counties provides for easy navigation from one county to the next. Recreational information includes an extensive list of primary parks for each county, state and federal public lands. National forest numbered roads, lake and stream boat launch and public access sites, hiking and canoe trails, golf courses, nature preserves, birding hot spots, public swimming beaches, and more. Quality map features include road surface distinction, sections and section numbers, civil and federal townships, address number systems, township offices, public high schools, ZIP code, and more. For the history buff, the Atlas includes extensive research on Michigan ghost towns and mine sites, old railroad grades, cemeteries, place name histories, and a historic site and museums index for each county.
Excellent maps and county histories.
Love the info and layout. Maps by county is more useful to me for daily use, for vacationing, and for birding. I find the info more useful than my old gazetteer. That said - the ink ran when a small amount of snow got in the seat pocket where this was kept, and the ink smeared on every page of the entire atlas. Huge surprise and disappointment.Additionally the contrast of the map is not ideal... a better quality of paper and ink could improve the readability of the map, which is especially important when there is so much info smashed together.Overall I want to see improvements with paper and ink - but love the content and layout. If the author/publisher improves the quality of materials used, it would make this 5 stars. As it is - mine is useless from a really small amount of snow (that fell off my son’s boots.)
There is no better map of Michigan in existence. If you're traveling anywhere in this state you must have this book. Even in this day of smart phones and GPS maps nothing beats a good old paper map for reliability and readability. This book also provides a lot of historical data and is a good read even when you're not on the road.
I've been a purchaser and user of mapbooks and atlases of Michigan for over 30 years and I'm also a cartographer as well. David M. Brown's maps and atlases have always been among the best, most accurate and highest quality maps available and with this new Third Edition of the Michigan County Atlas is no exception. Unfortunately, Mr. Brown has much less competition these days, as the variety of maps and atlases have both decreased as well as the quality of those that remain have dropped considerably. Even so, this atlas not only now covers the entire state, but each map has been updated and even more(!) great stuff has been packed onto each page already chock full of information. I cannot fathom the number and variety of information sources Mr. Brown consults to create maps with this much information on them!Beyond the maps themselves and the countless layers of information contained on them, the copious historical and recreational information makes this a reference work and a imminently useful travel companion. Every map is completely indexed with lists showing all roads, hydrology (lakes, rivers, etc.), historical points of interest, places (cities, villages, towns, four-corners, etc.), and a comprehensive listing of nearly every park, recreation area, nature preserve, and state game area in that county along with all of the amenities and facilities at each park! On a recent trip "Up North," a traveling companion started reading about the history of the various towns we were passing through and ended up learning so much, even about places we just drove past. Yes, the price of the atlas has increased a bit since the last edition about four years ago, but when you see that you're getting statewide map coverage, complete historical information, recreation listings and so much more, you're actually getting 3 or 4 books in one.Probably the one biggest thing that may turn off some people is that this is a more traditional "county map book" which used to be the only way a statewide atlas was constructed up through the 1970s and 80s. DeLorme was the first major mapmaker who started publishing the "grid-based" atlases where when you come to the edge of a page, you just turn to the next page to continue, and others (like National Geographic) have since come out with similar mapbooks. I've been a longtime user of both types and each have their pros and cons. Some people are more comfortable with the "grid-style" while others like the county-by-county setup. One of the biggest benefits of a county-based setup like this is that you can quickly turn to the county you're in without having to figure out what page you're on. And, if you want to see the entire county at once, this is the best set-up. The grid-based atlases can split some counties onto a half-dozen or more pages. The maps in a grid-based atlas are usually at one constant scale and the maps in this atlas are similarly all at one scale (1" = 3/8 mile), which is nice. When the Second Edition came out in 2009, I bought two for myself (one for the house, one for the car), one for my parents, and a few more for friends who like to poke around the state of Michigan. Everyone was very happy with that edition, with the primary exception being that Mr. Brown had not yet finished mapping the U.P. Now, the entire state is included, so it's hard to come up with a reason not to buy this edition! The other main gripe about the last edition was that it was "perfect-bound" and with the extreme level of use we put it through, the pages would start to come out. This one is spiral bound, so it will lay flat and you can fold it back on itself making it much more convenient for use in the car on the go. So, unless you just can't stand the county-by-county breakdown and MUST have a grid-style format, this is a must-have atlas for trips to and around Michigan. Even if you really love the format of the DeLorme, National Geographic and Sportsman's Connection mapbooks, I'd still challenge you to pick up a copy of this atlas, use it for a bit and see if you end up changing your mind.
Detail on this map is awesome. We bought it as a backup to the GPS for locating waterfalls in the U.P. and found that it had many waterfalls listed we weren't even aware of!
