Read Online and Download First Freedom: A Ride Through America's Enduring History with the Gun by David Harsanyi. From “one of America’s smartest political writers†(Glenn Beck) comes a fascinating and accessible history of the United States’ unique and enduring relationship with guns, for fans of Chris Kyle’s American Gun.For America, the gun is a story of innovation, power, violence, character, and freedom. From the founding of the nation to the pioneering of the West, from the freeing of the slaves to the urbanization of the twentieth century, our country has had a complex and lasting relationship with firearms. Now, in First Freedom, nationally syndicated columnist and veteran writer David Harsanyi explores the ways in which firearms have helped preserve our religious, economic, and cultural institutions for over two centuries. From Samuel Colt’s early entrepreneurism to the successful firearms technology that helped make the United States a superpower, the gun is inextricably tied to our exceptional rise. In the vein of popular histories like Salt and Seabiscuit, Harsanyi takes you on a captivating and thrilling ride of Second Amendment history that demonstrates why guns are not only an integral part of America’s past, but also an essential part of its future.
I do regularly read David Harsanyi's articles, and am a fan of his thought process. I was eagerly looking forward to this book, and I'm not disappointed so far, about halfway through. It's an exploration of the importance of guns throughout key American history, and isn't necessarily a thorough academic history of guns. The writing style is friendly, and nearly everything has source annotations. I'd argue that regardless of your stance on guns, understanding the history and evolution is extremely important in any sort of broader debate, and this book serve as a great introduction.
This is not a long book, nor is it comprehensive. I purchased the book yesterday, and finished reading it today. To be honest, to be comprehensive about the history of firearms on the North American continent would take a series of books that would make an encyclopedia company jealous.Mr. Harsanyi has put together a very good overview. It is well researched, and well written. There are compelling anecdotes, stories, and examples. Are there omissions? Yes! That, however, is to be expected and does not in the least detract from the accomplishment of putting together a concise and accessible history.Purchase this book. Read it. After you have read it, go over the notes and references. Now that you appetite is whetted, your journey can really begin!
What a delightful read. Always present is the right the founding fathers established to protect the other enumerated rights. But beyond that, this book is a celebration of man's ingenuity. From the sling David used to defeat Goliath to the leading-edge firearms of the present, Harsanyi explores how the prime directive of self-preservation is the foundation of liberty. And in America, that first freedom is the Second Amendment. Harsanyi explains the evolving technology but doesn't let technical esoterica spoil a good story. This historical perspective demystifies firearms, honoring them for the tools they are and celebrating the honorable purpose they serve in a free society. Behind the guns are brilliant minds and honorable men. Their tales are invigorating, the storytelling lively and fact-centered. This is a book that rises above politics. Unless one's politics are not founded on liberty.
I’ve been involved in firearm training since 1980; USMC Scout-Sniper Instructor (1980-88), SoCal law enforcement firearm coach/trainer (1990-2018), and currently an NRA Instructor and Chief Range Safety Officer.Harsayni’s book is filled with history I was previously unaware of. And it isn’t just the history of America’s Second Amendment, but a history - both personal and engineering, of the most famous American gun designers; Sam Colt, Smith & Wesson, Garand, etc. This book is more than simply a good read for any firearm enthusiast, but the book is filled with important knowledge for every single gun owner interested in protecting our rights. I plan on sharing tidbits from the book when I teach, and encouraging students to use Harsayni’s book to truly learn their craft.
From started to finish you're carried along on a powerful river of information and facts! Most "gun books" I feel obligated to read and try to convince myself: "It was, uh, INFORMATIVE! Yeah, that's it, INFORMATIVE."But "First Freedom"?I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!And I can't say enough good things about the audiobook version! FANTASTIC!
