Trying to get your kid’s grades up so they can get into a good college? Are you worried about your kid’s future? Are you frustrated by your teen’s poor study habits and lack of a sense of urgency to get grades up? Does it seem like you care more about your kid’s future than they do? What would it be like for you to know that your child is on track, getting good grades, and accepted into a great college? This is all possible and isn’t as hard as you may think to achieve! As parents, our intentions for our children are good, however, sometimes we lose sight of where and how to focus our energy. Dr. David Hoy has been working with teens and young adults for 25 years and is happy to share his eight-step process with you to move your child along with good grades, acceptance into a good college, and a bright future. In this book you will learn how to:• Help your I-gen child overcome barriers to achieving good grades• Implement parenting strategies that will motivate your child to work hard at getting good grades• Work through conflict with your child so that they can stay on track with school work• Develop an easy to follow organizational plan to getting good grades• Help your child get accepted into a good college.Pick up a copy today and put your child on course for success in school and acceptance into a great college!
Dr. Hoy makes a well-researched, but more importantly well-lived case for what our kids need to succeed in a world that increasingly serves up distractions, dangers, and opportunities to fail. The book succeeds best where Dr. Hoy is at his best: sharing values born of compassion, psychological insight, and a lived experience of overcoming adversity.I have read a fair few books on parenting ... as our daughter turns 12, I have tried to prepare and enlarge perspective before we become fully engaged with the "battlefield" of teenage worlds. If you want academic treatments, literary transportation or gilded tower advice, there are other books out there. But if you want practical, born of everyday experience, accessible-to-all foundation work (including explanations your teen would be able to discuss themselves), this book will help you be effective. While its title is focused on college and grades, I feel it is broader than that and it applies to laying a great foundation for kids to be successful human beings, period. The rapidly-eroding values of self-awareness, social connectedness, and empowering our children without entitling them, are just some of the "basics" the book argues for, with examples Dr. Hoy was able to observe at close range in his therapy practice, and at times in his own life ... the combination of the two is rather effective and credible.I should close with the disclaimer I have known Dr. Hoy as his patient for several years. I and by extension my family have already benefited from his wisdom and talent before I bought this book. Being in any way "connected" with the author means that in some ways I am worse equipped to leave an "unbiased" review, but in some ways better equipped as someone with lived experience of putting his advice to work. By the end, you will feel you know Dr. Hoy a bit yourself, and I cannot recommend the experience enough.
This book is a thought-provoking, strategic, and practical guide that provides an easy-to-follow process to prepare your child for college and beyond. As an educational consultant who works with K-12 families daily, I feel this book should be required reading for parents with kids of all ages. Dr. Hoy provides a thoughtful approach to understanding and managing the unique obstacles that I-gen students face both inside and outside of the classroom. He demonstrates how to create a strong foundation of childhood/adolescent personal development and provides many relatable examples and profound statistics. This book provides deep insight into the core of understanding and supporting children productively and lovingly. If more parents used the approach that Dr. Hoy suggests, students would certainly be less anxious and stressed out. This book is a wonderful resource that is sure to help many families. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
I just finished Getting Into A Good College. The title doesn’t serve it entirely. It is beautifully written in a clean, clear style and format. The author uses genuine examples of his own challenges in learning as a child and as a parent. The suggestions made in creating individualized plans for both kids and their parents In conflict are directional, purposeful, attainable and far reaching beyond academic performance = good college only!Congratulations to Dr. Hoy on the publishing of this wonderful book. Thanks to Dr. Hoy in sharing how he has come to live a beautiful life with his wife and children, inspiring others to do the same!
This book is extremely helpful especially as a parent of teens and a school counselor. This book has helped me to have conversations with my students as it relates to setting good habits that will help them in college and beyond. It has also helped me to establish a better relationship with my kids so they can become independent and successful students. This book is a great ready for parents and individuals that work with students especially high school students.
This book is not a step by step process as to the criteria and procedures for getting into a good college. This is 140 pages of everyday practical application as to how to nurture your relationship with todays children and THEIR experiences to help guide them into the best college for them. I was especially impressed with Dr. Hoy's instruction to me (the parent) to open up with my children about my past difficulties or struggles in relatable matters.Excellent Read!
