Knowing the importance of bees to our food production, as well as appreciating the yummy taste of honey, I was intrigued by this introduction to personal beekeeping when I saw it at one of my favorite book review sites. If you are contemplating starting a hive in your own backyard, this book by a man—who did the same and has been a beekeeper for seven years—is loaded with lots of practical information about how to start and maintain a hive, harvest the honey, and deal with pests. I actually think this is a worthwhile idea because the bee population has been in danger for years. Of course, too, the bees can help you as well if you have your own garden that needs pollinating and if you like to use honey for both cooking and its more medicinal uses. I like that the author emphasizes using natural and organic methods of beekeeping.Because the author has been doing this for so long, I did sometimes find myself scratching my head at some of the terminology, but luckily Mister Google has answers and Miss YouTube can offer more depth. I think the book needed a little introductory section that explained the layout of the book and gave more guidance to the information to come. Some information on the same topic was split up. For instance, the information on the disastrous mites was both at the beginning briefly as well as an end section. The author should have kept like information together. That said, I think this book is a very practical introduction if you want to try beekeeping on your own property.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Wow, I never thought the process of keeping bees meant so many steps. For those who want to be self sufficient and have the natural benefits of homemade honey and the convince of making your own candles it would be worth it. This is a comprehensive book outlining all aspects of bee keeping. It is practical and give many tips on cost cutting. In addition, there are numerous resources mentioned including videos. I think this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in beekeeping or those who are just interested in bees.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I like that the author shares so many effective ways he made his own tools because most can’t afford the cost of all the equipment needed. I would have liked diagrams to go with the explanation. In the arc there were no designs or a video that was mentioned was not accessible. He gives great skill advice and if you don’t take heed you’ll learn real quick it was good advice. I recommend reading several books on the subject and actually working with a beekeeper before starting your own.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Not having any bees yet makes it a bit hard to thoroughly review this guide, but my overall impression is that it seems to cover everything involved in starting up, maintaining a hive, and ways to extract honey. However, there were many places, especially in the DIY section, where it would have been helpful with more photos, and there are some grammar issues that should be addressed.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Last summer my son brought home a hive of a thousand or so bees. I felt like my grandchildren had arrived. Bees are absolutely wonderful but they are animals and need some care. This book helps care for them without becoming overly burdensome - personally I would look at the bees all day but they actually function better if you let them do what God intended for them to do. Thank you to this author for writing a comprehensive beginner book for those of us who love bees.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
