It seems to help. David, meanwhile, grows up struggling with his own troublesome sexual urges and seeking some way to make sense of it all. Eventually he starts attending meetings too. Alcoholics Anonymous. Overeaters Anonymous. Debtors Anonymous. Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. More and more meetings. Meetings for issues he doesn't have. With stark, sharply drawn art and unflinching honesty, David Heatley explores the strange and touching relationships he develops, and the truths about himself and his family he is forced to confront, while "working" an ever-increasing number of programs. The result is a complicated, unsettling, and hilarious journey—of far more than 12 steps.
As a long-time fan of Heatley's work — both in comics and illustration — I pre-ordered this book as soon as I heard about it. I tore through it as soon as it arrived, completely captivated by the narrative. Heatley's specialty is brutally honest self-examination and revelation, and his earnest vulnerability is a key to his story. In a narrator we had reason to doubt, it would not work — but he *never* seems like he's going easy on himself. In fact, the opposite is true. He passionately demonstrates the twelve-step belief that only through "rigorous honesty" can one find recovery. This book traces his journey through a number of 12-step programs — sometimes in parallel, sometimes in series — in search of that recovery. If you have never heard of some of these programs, you might be surprised how many there are (AA, ACOA, Al-Anon, OA, DA, UA, SLAA —and no, I'm not making any of those up). We meet a variety of characters (with anonymity scrupulously maintained) in a variety of meetings, with an array of different programs and formats and norms and lingo. A deeply human picture is painted of people striving for connection, healing, and help, often against great personal odds and with crippling trauma and baggage. Heatley is honest about both the foundational wounds in his own upbringing, and the myriad ways the trauma manifests in later life — with his biological family, his wife and children, in his work life, and in his creative life. What emerges is a portrait of a person who can make anything into an addiction, including recovery. You might not come away from this book wanting to spend time with him. The level of revelation leaves you feeling like you have x-ray vision, at least into this one person, and it's not always comfortable to look at someone's skeleton. But I found myself feeling a great deal of empathy, compassion, and, yes, love for the man who invited us along on this journey. It is clear he longs to share his journey in order to help — himself, yes, but you too. And me.I won't reveal where the book ends, or any of the horrifying, hilarious, awkward, or transcendent milestones along the way. But the most touching parts of the book, for me, were in his intersections with those closest to him — his parents, his siblings, his wife. It's clear that recovery programs— just like the illnesses it aims to treat — have wide-reaching effects. Whether or not you think them helpful, harmful, or somewhere in between, millions of people are in, or adjacent to recovery. If you know someone in recovery, whether from alcohol or drugs, food issues, sexual or financial misconduct — this book could provide insight into their struggle — though one doesn't get the sense that Heatley's is the most common path. And if you think you *don't* know someone in recovery, you're probably wrong. The 4th step of AA requires a member to perform "a searching and fearless moral inventory" of themselves. If that's not the perfect subtitle for this book, I don't know what is. Heatley has searched, and he fearlessly shares the fruits of that search. I strongly recommend this book.
And it moves at a surprising clip. Actually, the author's control of pace - because he does slow down when he wants to get into every juicy cringe-detail of an interaction from his life story - is one of the hidden strengths of this book. I'll tell you, when this book made me cry it was timing just as much as the inherent power of the moment. It's about the author's childhood into adulthood doing 12-step programs almost like a religion he was born into. And how hard that is on a spouse and children that have not remotely bought in. He gets hooked on recovery.I read a negative review that mentioned narcissism, and I have to say, I heard David Heatley on WFMU and he definitely copped to his own narcissism. I took the book as a kind of a narcissist confession, in fact, to his family. Of course my heart was always with his spouse and kids, I don't know if I ever wasn't thinking about them. But I've been them. I have some experience with the narcissist parent, and at least for me, it was amazing to watch an artist really confront their own narcissism. Made me hopeful.
an incredibly great book. as was his previous book. David is a fantastic cartoonist. this book was highly entertaining, and searingly honest; which is what you want from a memoirist. highly recommended.
Raw. Honest. Very FUNNY. Made me cry. Read this book.
Whenever I read a graphic memoir, a thought comes to mind: Does the nature of the memoir in graphic form take something away from the experience of the author? Or does the reader feel more involved in the author’s life because the story is being told in pictures as well? Does it matter at all? Or do you feel like a voyeur stepping into someone else’s life (if only for a short while) and perhaps even judging them for their choices and how it all panned out for them?Qualification: A Graphic Memoir in Twelve Steps is a memoir of an addiction to 12-Step programs. I had never heard of something like this before, and this is what attracted me to this memoir. Heatley has issues and attends 12-Step programs for those. Till he also has some issues which he doesn’t and attends twelve-step programs for those too.It all begins with his parents (as it always does?). Their troubled marriage, and seeking counselling, to attending programs, and then some more. The book brims with black humour, at every stage, perhaps trying to reduce the impact of the not-so-pretty-picture painted by Heatley (which of course is nothing but the truth).Qualification traces the journey of the author through the various programs – and I was surprised at how many were there in the US of A. I don’t know if we have so many in India, given how we only seem to know majorly about Alcoholic Anonymous and that’s that. We see Heatley’s life up close and personal and maybe that’s why it is also a little too much at times – from all the addiction to what went on in his head and his perception of others around him, only gives rise to empathy, compassion, and love. What comes out of this memoir is David’s relationships with the people around him and how they impact his relationship with addiction. Heatley tells it like it happened. The quirks, the eccentricities, the highs, and the lows as they took place, and where he is today as a person (well, some glimpse of it).Qualification is a read that makes you look at your addictions that perhaps you haven’t faced or know of yet. It is a book that helped me for sure to understand my demons when it comes to book-hoarding, buying, and more. Now to only do something about it.Having said all of this, Qualification is a memoir that stays and makes its presence felt in the most unassuming manner. I caught myself thinking about what happens to me when I am faced with the catalysts of my addictions and how I react thereof. Qualification will maybe also help you see yourself. Read it. It is completely worth it.
