The central idea behind the album called for the artists to play a different vintage mandolin or guitar on each cut. On this remarkable recording, David and Tony perform 17 original compositions on a wide range of vintage instruments. Mel Bay Publications, Inc. is proud to present both a mandolin and a guitar edition of Tone Poems, both transcribed by noted guitarist/arranger John Carlini. All 17solos in each book are written in notation and tablature.

I ordered this for my brother,he loves it! He found out it was back in print....He had been looking all over for this book,and FINALLY found out through speaking to the publisher , that its back in print. He can't put it down ,he's been learning all the tunes,Thanks to MEL BAY!!!!!! Straight from my heart and my brothers heart!

The original Tone Poems is a classic album by two masters: David Grisman and Tony Rice. This book was transcribed by John Carlini, Tony Rice's jazz mentor. I suspect that the transcriptions are terrifyingly accurate. Sadly, the book seems to be so far out of print that no one has one for sale. I even called Mel Bay and asked them to make a .pdf of the galleys (which I would gladly pay for). They promised to call back, but didn't (boo!). I hope to see this one back in print one day, as I'd love to read these transcriptions.
