In One Hundred Autobiographies, poet and scholar David Lehman applies the full measure of his intellectual powers to cope with a frightening diagnosis and painful treatment for cancer. No matter how debilitating the medical procedures, Lehman wrote every day during chemotherapy and in the aftermath of radical surgery. With characteristic riffs of wit and imagination, he transmutes the details of his inner life into a prose narrative rich in incident and mental travel. The reader journeys with him from the first dreadful symptoms to the sunny days of recovery. This "fake memoir," as he refers ironically to it, features one-hundred short vignettes that tell a life story. One Hundred Autobiographies is packed with insights and epiphanies that may prove as indispensable to aspiring writers as Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet.Set against the backdrop of Manhattan, Lehman summons John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Edward Said, and Lionel Trilling among his mentors. Dostoyevsky shows up, as does Graham Greene. Keith Richards and Patti Hansen put in an appearance, Edith Piaf sings, Clint Eastwood saves the neighborhood, and the Rat Pack comes along for the ride. These and other avatars of popular culture help Lehman to make sense of his own mortality and life story. One Hundred Autobiographies reveals a stunning portrait of a mind against the ropes, facing its own extinction, surviving and enduring.
David Lehman is the prolific poet, critic, teacher, and anthologist, perhaps best known as the series editor of the influential Best American Poetry annual, which he started back in 1988. This new book, One Hundred Autobiographies, is a miscellaneous collection of “the thoughts, dreams, memories, hopes, fears, and fantasies†that he recorded while waging an ultimately successful battle against advanced bladder cancer. Though that might seem to many to be an uninviting premise for a book, Lehman brings a highly evolved sense of humor and a determined resilience to the project, which in turn lends the writing a spiritual buoyancy one would not expect given the circumstances of its composition. The range of topics and emotions covered in these 100 short pieces is part of the book’s tremendous appeal—there are memories of his youth as a student in Britain and Paris; brief essays on other writers; poems; reflections on life, baseball, religion, music, love, and poetry; jokes; and, of course, reports on the arduous treatment he is forced to endure. The tone often shifts from one chapter to the next—“More difficult it is to ponder the absence of myself from the world. How short is our collective memory: I think of gaudy poets dead and now nearly forgotten by all but a handful of PHD candidates. How swiftly the absence swallows us,†he writes in #45 (“Oblivionâ€), followed by “Bar stools have this much in common with the chemotherapy waiting room. They’re both full of bullshit artists and compulsive story-of-my-life big mouths,†from the very next little chapter. The writing is masterly and alive from start to finish. This is one of those books you wish would never end.
David Lehman's One Hundred Autobiographies is a lovely, even though sometimes painful, memoir. He weave in so many disparate things, so many slices of his life. These one hundred short entries add up to the portrait of a courageous brilliant man confronting demons with grace. He manage to sketch a complete portrait of himself through these various fragments, an impressionist or even cubist view of his ordeal. He allows his miraculously unfractured self to emerge. As a cancer survivor, I approached the book with some trepidation, as often these accounts are brutal. But his is full of grace notes. My favorite line is, "I hate graham crackers."
