Cram was taken prisoner in North Africa in November 1941, which began a long odyssey through 12 different POW camps, three Gestapo prisons and one asylum. He fled his captors no fewer than 21 times, including his final successful escape from a POW column in April 1945. Perhaps the most dramatic of his attempts was from Gavi, the "Italian Colditz." Gavi was a maximum-security prison near Genoa for the pericolosi, the "most dangerous" inmates because of their perpetual hunger to escape. It was here that Alastair met David Stirling, the legendary founder of the SAS, and cooked up the plan for what would become the "Cistern Tunnel" escape, one of the most audacious but hitherto little-known mass escape attempts of the entire war.Â

The Great Escape and other escape movies may capture the public's attention, but The 21 Escapes of Lt Alastair Cram is even more fascinating. The author has done a ton of research and uses eye witness accounts to reveal how complex and thorough the Allied escape teams were during WWII. There's also a lot of analysis of what worked and what didn't because escape artists learned more as time went on. A detail I particularly like is that Cram observed that Italians were harder to fool than the Germans - they noticed what people were wearing including the footwear and looked closer at physiognomy.

Author David Guss describes Lt Alastair Cram as embodying a rare combination of boldness, courage, ingenuity, physical prowess, language skills and a lack of disabling fear. He and other fellow, officer prisoners not only embraced a duty to attempt escape, but in Cram’s case, considered escape as a challenging—and dangerous—extreme sport, which he repeated again and again. Guss’s investigative research uncovered Cram’s personal journals, and engaged interviews with close wartime survivors to provide primary sources for Alastair Cram’s escape adventures, and intimate views into his thoughts and personality. An outstanding book in the genre of WWII escape literature such as Reid’s “Escape from Colditz” and Brickhill’s, “The Great Escape.”

This book was written with incredible detail, with corroboration from many sources including Cram’s own dairies. This is a fascinating account of Lt Crams exploits as well as many others.

Breathtaking account of a British WWII POW escape artist, British Lt. Alastair Cram. Author David Guss is a great writer and has done his homework with thorough research to write a fascinating account of this, until now, unknown hero of World War II.Can't wait for the movie.
