I am not a confirmed purchase as I received the book as a gift before I was able to buy a copy of my own. Put simply, the book is masterfully done.The title of this one is a bit of a misnomer in that it doesn't just focus on the scout platoon, or the snipers of the scout platoon, but is a well researched yet lively retelling of the first week of combat that the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada fought in Normandy in July 1944. The story of Operation Spring has been told many times before, but the author has done well to bring the subject material to life in ways the story has never been told before. This is a very intimate and up-close account that focuses on the men at the pointy end and paints them as flesh and blood men rather than historical cyphers. Yet the focus is allowed to change, and O'Keefe skillfully manages to step back and give a good overall view of the battlefield where necessary, including at brigade and division level, and even the view from the German side.This book is the first account where I've felt a palpable sense of the confusion that must have reigned in these opening battles in Normandy. O'Keefe skillfully changes the viewpoint to built dramatic tension - not as a gimmick but because it is the best way to tell the story for full impact on the reader.The book is very well researched, without going into the weeds, and paints vivid pictures. Among the many things I like about the book, there is also a focus, perhaps overdue, on psychological stress and battle exhaustion casualties that is often missing from the standard historical accounts. The Canadian Army was very conscious of psychological stress by 1944, and Terry Copp wrote extensively (and academically) on the subject. But it's rare to see that kind of discussion integrated into a battle account the way O'Keefe has done here.Full disclosure, my name is in the acknowledgements, for which I am grateful, though I have no stake in the book's success, did not contribute in any material way and certainly never saw a word of it until long after it was published.I am astonished at the high quality of writing that Canada's part in Normandy continues to generate. After reading Reid's excellent No Holding Back and Milner's game-changing Stopping the Panzers I was convinced the trend could not go on much longer. I am happy to continually be proven wrong.
