Educational and kids absolutely love searching through this book.

Our homeschooling family loves these “Magnified” books! Such a fun way to learn, we have all 3 and they are amazing.

This is an interesting book about life in (mostly British and French) castles in the Middle Ages for young school-aged children. Oversized and illustrated in great detail in a style reminiscent of "Where's Waldo," each subject is given two pages and includes a list of 10 things to spot (answers are given at the end of the book). Amid spreads on various aspects of castle life, there is also a bit of history included (ex: the Battle of Poitiers, Joan of Arc, and a gallery of famous knights). The more gruesome bits of history are glossed over, keeping it a safe read for its audience (Joan's death is not mentioned, for example). A two-page "Can You Find" section tests reader's memory. A timeline from 1066 until Hentry VIII's death in 1547, a description of how gunpowder and guns brought about the end of the castle, and a glossary close the book.Castles Magnified includes a magnifying glass that is cleverly stored in the front cover to help readers more closely examine the detailed illustrations, but it is cardboard. I doubt that it will last very long with repeated use, and my magnifying glass was a bit blurry, even with my first use. You might want to have another magnifying glass at hand to avoid disappointment.

This is a great book! It is super informative on castles and life in the dark/middle ages. It goes through the evolution from wooden to stone castles to the end of castles due to gunpowder. There are chapters focusing on the feudal system, life in town, the system of nobility, entertainment and food, magic and medicine, and battles and sieges. There are also pages on Joan of Arc and a gallery of famous knights. Each chapter is a two page spread, 95% of which is filled with an intricate illustration of life and goings on. There is a short informative write up (one or two paragraphs) on the subject of the chapter plus a feature called "10 Things to spot" where the author highlights specific items/people in the full page illustrations that the reader should look for along with a little descriptor/informative blurb for each thing. The reader can take the magnifying to glass to go over the picture to help find the specified objects. The pictures are very detailed and the items and people are rather small, so the glass helps you find them, though it's not impossible to find the items without the magnifying glass (it's basically a scale similar to Where's Waldo?)It's a lot of fun for my son to look through and my husband and I enjoy it as well. I'm a grown woman and I learned a lot about the middle ages and castles from this book. I highly recommend it.

The magnifying glass is a cute gimmick, but this book would be fine without it--so don't be fooled into thinking the inclusion of a toy is the only good part about this book.The magnifying glass does fit securely in the cover, but a some small closure mechanism (hook-and-loop tape, nap, latch, etc) would give me more confidence about it staying inside the book. The magnifier isn't necessary for enjoying the book, but it really does add an element of fun!The pictures are wonderful--the crowded, chaotic, detailed-yet-simple style popular with many find-a-picture books. There are items to find on each set of pages--they are natural parts of the scenes (like a guy holding a cannon in a battle scene) not items hidden by illustration (like needing to find a baseball bat and discovering someone's forearm is actually shaped like that bat.)The facts with each drawing are also really great--just enough to give some fun information without being boring.I highly recommend this great book.
