Read Online and Download Creativity, Spirituality, and Making a Buck by David Nichtern. A friendly, funny, practical guide for creatives and entrepreneurs, written by a four-time Emmy award-winning and two-time Grammy-nominated composer-guitarist-producer who has worked with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Garcia, Lana Del Rey, and Krishna Das, among many others. Also a beloved and highly regarded Buddhist teacher, David teaches readers how to integrate their creative process with their spiritual practice and livelihood.“How do I make a living doing what I love?†“Am I a sellout as an artist if I want to be successful?†“How do I integrate my spiritual principles with the art of running a business? And actually, um, how do I run a business?†Wondering how to reconcile your calling with your need to make a living wage, or what to do once your art starts selling, or how to achieve success in your field, or what it even means to be successful? David Nichtern offers his lived, learned experience as an entrepreneur, musician, and Buddhist teacher to first help you figure out what “success†means to you and then show you how to get there. He offers advice on the creative process and principles of business and ethics—everything from “listen to the muse!†to “protect your intellectual property!â€â€”and provides mindfulness exercises to help you integrate inspiration and aspiration, vocation and avocation—to go from surviving to thriving. Whether you’re a baker trying to grow from the farmer’s market to a brick-and-mortar or a CEO exploring how taking care of your employees can be the same as taking care of your business—if you’re trying to align your spiritual, creative, and financial pursuits and discover what it means to truly live well, this book is for you.
Yikes this book is just not good. Look, I’m a musician, a practicing Buddhist, and at an age, mid-30’s, where I’m really working on how to make my way in the world- so I was excited when I heard about this book. The topic itself is amazing (there, I said one nice thing). But the book itself is insubstantial and unoriginal, I can’t imagine it being useful to anyone at any stage of their spiritual/creative/career path. I expected it to be geared towards beginners- which it is- but there is no meat, nothing remotely useful (Nichtern! Take your own advice from chapter 11! You’ve leaned so far towards accessibility that it’s no good for anyone!) I feel quite bad for writing such a negative review, but since reading it causes suffering, it is my humble duty to recommend not bothering with this book.
It is the only book I've come across that attempts to bridge what can be perceived as divergent paths in life; spiritual, artistic and financial in order to help people become more well rounded individuals. The author's pithy advice offers a probing sense of examination, confidence and understanding in meeting these challenges. The notebook questions are also valuable in looking at one's past as well as planning for the future. Nichtern knows what he is writing about because he has lived and practiced what he preaches.
I very much enjoyed reading this book. In fact, in a way, it is multiple books in one: 1) It is a book on mindfulness and meditation. The appendix of the book, which provides detailed instructions to do various kinds of meditation, is excellent and a reason in and of itself to buy the book. It includes directions for mindfulness meditation, awareness meditation, walking meditation, contemplative meditation, and loving-kindness meditation. I have read many books on meditation and this section of the book is much better than most in providing clear instruction; 2) It is a book about business, particularly geared towards entrepreneurs and people with a creative idea that could germinate into a business. I am a business executive with a Harvard MBA and found Nichtern’s advice to be useful and sound. His discussion about running a business in an ethical way is excellent for anyone in business, including seasoned executives; 3) The book is a fun autobiography. Nichtern has much to offer here given his interesting and varied background as a long-time meditation educator, a sales & marketing executive, a songwriter who wrote the hit song “Midnight at the Oasisâ€, and a musician who collaborated with people like Jerry Garcia of the band the Grateful Dead. Nichtern tells stories of what he did well and not so well in these endeavors to help readers avoid his mistakes and, instead, lead them on the path of success; 4) The book is a “workbookâ€, which provides many optional exercises for readers to gain much further insight into themselves. In conclusion, I recommend this book. By buying it, you are getting multiple books in one. You are also getting expert advice on mindfulness, meditation, and starting and running a business — all in a fun and enjoyable package.
I'm using this book to help me solidify a new business offering I'm launching. The book is well written, funny, and there's a pdf workbook to download. With the authors' guidance, you put pen to paper and figure out how to make your vision real. I think that going through the exercises helped me the most and might be my favorite part of this book. I highly suggest printing out the questions. It's worth the time to figure out your heaven and your earth. I actually feel like I accomplished something! The author combines business savvy with an understanding of how creative people tick, and threads in Buddhist teachings to bring it all together. This book will help you clarify your offering, even if you already have an existing business. I definitely recommend Creativity, Spirituality, & Making a $ and know I'll go back to my notes again and again.
This could easily be three different books and I'm glad the author saw fit to combine these three topics. It's easy to compartmentalize creativity, spirituality, and commerce, but in this book we experience the ways in which they are related and can be integrated. While my first read through was quick, to get a sense of the whole thing, my second and future reasons will be slow so that I can give time and attention to the myriad workbook exercises, journaling prompts, and mindfulness instructions that are central to the learning experience. The author has packed a lot of practical wisdom into this book, and it's backed by a lifetime of experience.I would recommend this book for people in many circumstances. Professional creative people - artists, authors, musicians, performers - no matter which stage of your career you're in, you'll find good things here. People who have been thinking about nurturing their creativity, deepening their every day spiritual experience, or starting a small business will also gain from reading this book. You can work with this book with any level of rigor and commitment that you can muster, but you'll get the most out of it if you approach it with a high level of dedication and diligence.
