Read Online and Download Antares Rising by David L E McGillem. Earth's final war in 2171 sends the remaining members of humanity spreading away from its home system. The Antares, mankind's last great exploration vessel, is lost. After nearly a thousand years, humanity has fallen into a constant state of war as the old animosity continues unchecked, and the race of men slowly descends into a selfishness where life and freedom are commodities. When the crew of the SR33 Trinidad finds the Antares, they must race against the forces that are arrayed against them. Running from the combined might of humanity's two galactic governments, the crews of the two ships struggle to bond as they repair the ship that is mankind's last hope to return to the path they have long abandoned.
When this story begins, on the dawn of universal peace, Caosb's great-great-great-great grandfather was not yet a gleam in someone's eye, yet by the last chapter he is the catalyst for a solution to the universe's apocalyptic trajectory. I'm not a big fan of sci-fi but this epochal alternate history has some movement and flavor and a feel that is not dependent upon laser blasts and super heroes. Mr. McGillem crafts a universe that, despite the potential for perfect peace at the start has devolved into the worst that sentient beings have managed to craft--divisive economy, institutionalized war, slavery and many more nightmare inducing concepts. We don't know how it turns out because this is obviously written as the "first in a series" offering. I, for one, hope that it comes to fruition. Fans of Heinlein will feel right at home. An easy read and a thought-provoking exercise.
The book is a slow start. There is quite a bit of exposition and a lot of characters introduced very quickly that might have been better as a slow reveal or even made into cliffhanger chapter endings. I found a lot of the ideas and concepts very intriguing, though most (not all) of the characters were usually predictable, with obvious analogs in other series. However, the depth of the world-building is excellent and concepts introduced mostly get paid off by the end. The biggest strength by far, I think, is McGillem's gift for describing his climactic space battle in human terms and not through strategy and technology, which is normally the weakness of a lot of military science fiction. In the end, I probably didn't latch on to the characters as much as the author intended, but the high-stakes story that was set up, as well as the intriguing sequel teased at the end, left me wanting to read more adventures in this well-plotted universe.
grate story, I will keep you engaged with it.found to many characters being introduced to early in the story making in hard to form a connection with some of them. other than that a grate book and very entertaining, this book really describes the powerful imagination that the author has and the abilities to develop a detailed and complex story In a very futuristic world.at a certain point, I felt like the characters where to predictable and that the world surrounding them was to complex for some of the characters to co exist.other than that really good and well developed story. I'll be waiting on the second part.
This is a great first outing for the author. He developed his characters and crafted an interesting and complex universe for his characters to exist. You can feel the influence of some great sci-fi writers, but the story takes its own path. I recommend this book to lovers of the genre, but it is approachable to casual fans as well.
David McGillem's first step into the published world is a tightly written run of emotions as an optimist tries to bring humanity back to the human race after centuries without it. Some people don't want that. And one person doesn't want to try again.[Buying a first run print often comes with mistakes. David is in good company, I resisted circling to word "to" where too should have been, like my mother did in her copy of I Robot.]
