Read Online and Download At What Cost?: Defending Adolescent Development in Fiercely Competitive Schools by David L. Gleason PSY D. Anxiety, depression, and their dangerous manifestations-substance abuse, eating disorders, self-injury and suicide- are increasing student conditions at many competitive high schools. Paradoxically, most of these schools promote themselves as being committed to students' holistic development in academics, athletics and the arts, and in their personal, social, and emotional growth. So why are so many students struggling? Dr. Gleason has investigated these concerns in competitive high schools throughout the United States and around the world, and has found almost complete unanimity in how educators and parents have responded to his interviews. In sum, these caring and dedicated adults fully admit to overscheduling, overworking and, at times, overwhelming their students and teenaged children. This conflict - adults wanting to educate and parent adolescents in healthy and balanced ways, but simultaneously, overscheduling, overworking and, at times, overwhelming them - is at the heart of this book.
At What Cost points out the painful truth that we as parents and educators “talk the talk†when it comes to caring for our students, but often fail – sometimes tragically -- to “walk the walkâ€. As a marriage and family therapist, I’m constantly working with families as they navigate the stress associated with the academic demands placed on our youth. Dr. Gleason’s fascinating, enlightening exploration into the perils of educating our children is a must read for any school, parent, administrator that truly desires to “walk the walk†when it comes to educating our children in a cohesive, challenging way, without damaging the very children we are trying to help.At What Cost points out the pervasive hypocrisy of our schools which profess to champion a balanced, enriching life for young students, but yet burdens these vulnerable hearts and minds with impossible academic and extra-curricular standards. However, Dr. Gleason does not leave us doomed with the reality of the anxiety, stress and depression that so many young students suffer at the hands of teachers, parents and administrators who care, but are trapped in dysfunctional structures that perpetuate our children’s academic misery. At What Cost provides specific examples of how various schools have made real, effective changes to provide an authentically caring, balanced academic environment without compromising academic integrity and reputation. These are not one-size-fits-all solutions, but proven methods for an academic institution to develop its own, unique solutions for creating a healthy academic experience. Ultimately, At What Cost? is not just a must read, but a must do!Tedd M. Taskey, MS, LMFT
A must read for anyone in education who cares about the rising levels of stress and anxiety in kids today, the role that schools play in that, and what we can do about it. But be prepared to own the idea that the solution to the "bind" that Gleason so compellingly articulates exists today in schools is a) of our own making, and b) can only be resolved by having the courage to do the right thing for kids even if it puts our value as educators into a new light. It's time to stop trying to "fix" the kids and, instead, reflect deeply on the negative impacts our current system of schooling is having.
This book is a "must read" for anyone who is involved in the education of teens or is the parent of a pre-teen and teenager. We are at an inflection point where we must realistically look at how the pressures we've created on our children and our schools, with the best intentions, are actually damaging the kids we love. This requires a hard look at our attitudes, systems, pedagogy, and goals in the light of what we now know about teen development and the painful statistics of all those kids who are hurting in numbers not seen or recognized before. All of us must be part of the solutions.
A powerful and important read for anyone in education, and for all parents. Dr. Gleason has immense experience in independent schools and his research is compelling.
David Gleason highlights the brain science we cannot afford to ignore. This is an important read for anyone who cares about child development. I highly recommend this book.
