Read Online and Download The Circle: A Dan Lenson Novel (Dan Lenson Novels Book 3) by David Poyer. For four years at Annapolis he prepared for this, pledging his youth, his ambition, and even his life. But when junior officer Dan Lenson finally gets his commission, it's an aging World War II destroyer. Now, with a mix of pride and fear, he heads into the world's most dangerous seas.As the Ryan plunges into the dark waters of the Arctic Circle at the height of storm season, Lenson and the crew pursue a mysterious and menacing enemy. But he soon discovers a foe even more dangerous within the Ryan, advancing a shocking agenda that drives the ship closer and closer to disaster-testing Lenson's life and loyalty to their very limit.
The author knows his subject, knows how to write, and knows how to pull the reader into the book. Well-written, well-research novel about the interpersonal relationships on a small, old, US destroyer. Both the ship and crew were asked to do more than they were capable and what occurred before and after. My only complaint is that if you want to follow the main character's career, you should not read the books in the order they were written. Do some research and figure out the correct order. So far and in career order, I have read The Circle, The Med, The Passage, and now Tomahawk, to be followed by the The Gulf.
I have to rate this one five stars, although I had some issues with the story. This is a story about a brand-new Ensign assuming his first duty posting on an obsolete US destroyer. He is immediately challenged by corruption on the ship, certain bad sailors who use drugs, problems among the officers, and many of the other problems that plague our armed forces to this day.I found the action surrounding the Russian submarine sometimes hard to follow. Great story though, with echoes of "Red October" but not really. The Board of Inquiry sequence is what caused me to rate this one five stars. Never have I enjoyed a military law story more. This was very, very realistically done, and gripping. I literally could not put it down. Then the author had to spoil the ending by having the protagonist, Ensign Lenson, behave with breathtaking stupidity and irrationality. No one, and I repeat no one, would have behaved as Lenson did in the last few pages. Rarely have I encountered a more screwed-up and implausible ending. But the Board of Inquiry sequence was so realistic, clearly written, and gripping that I nonetheless feel compelled to rate this one five stars. RJB.
This is a novel written by someone who has lived through the events described. All of the Dan Lenson novels have you feeling you are there with him. Some other reviewers complain about the use of technical terms or terms specific to the navy, or to sailors. Most of the jargon used can be understood by their context. If there are any terms that are not clear, they should use a dictionary. I have read all of the Dan Lenson novels once. This is my second time through them and they are as fresh as the first time I read them. If anyone likes military stories that are written form experience by a good author, I recommend any of these books. I would start with "The Circle" as it is the first book in the series, from the perspective of Dan Lenson's career. The publish dates do not reflect Lenson's timeline in the service. the author's website lists the books in this order.
I've read several of Mr. Poyer's books, and overall prefer the Galloway series to the Lensen series. This book, though, is an exception. "The Circle" is a fictional, first-hand account of our Navy at near-war, as experienced by a newly minted Ensign. Note that unlike the other services, the Navy is *always* at near-war, except when they are actually in a shooting war. Here they edge even closer than usual, as the overdue-for-scrapping destroyer Ryan tangles with a rogue Soviet sub.I came into the USAF as a new officer at the end of the Vietnam era, just slightly after the timeframe of this book. Poyer's bang-on depiction of the military people and controversies of that time brought back lots of unpleasant memories. He also accurately portrays the issues a new officer struggles with, as he tries to fit in but also exhibit the leadership qualities expected of him (or her, but back then it was mostly "him"s). This isn't one of those warm, cozy reads; this is more of a fingernails on the chalkboard experience. The negative reviews here seem to agree that the first 2/3s of the book is great, and the last 1/3 drags. What Poyer has done is take two books about the same subject, and splice them together into one. That splice is where the problem comes in. The first "book" (ch 1-21), which is mislabeled as a techno-thriller but is more accurately described as action or military fiction, is superb. I would rank this not far behind Alistair Maclean's "HMS Ulysses", which I think is the best fictional naval action book ever written. Poyer, like Maclean, brings his first person experience and uncannily descriptive writing skills into play, and crafts a suspenseful, well-paced, fascinating story. Every person and object has a place in his story; there is no extraneous detail or sideline thrown in just to keep you off balance or fill the pages. The second "book" (ch 22-epilogue) is mostly written as a court transcript, with a few pages of dialogue thrown in for continuity. This transcript is extremely repetitive, with details of the tragedy being rehashed over and over. It's even worse because after the exciting, "you are there" realism of the first part, you now get dry-as-bones courtroom testimony. I'll give Poyer credit for a brave try at something new and different, but the effect is an utter failure. You really can't skip the last part if you want to understand what happened, but it's boring and painful to wade through. It doesn't help that when you reach the end, your reward is not uplifting and enriching, but depressingly thought-provoking.Despite the ponderous transcript, I still give this 5/5 stars. The rest of the book is just so good, and so exciting, and so believably true to life, that I would recommend this book to anyone. Buy it, read it, and just grind through the last 1/3 - it's worth it.
First, I have no personal or business connection to the author, the author's agent, or the publisher. I have read and enjoyed all of the author's books in which Dan Lenson appears as the main character. This is one of the best in the series. It is the first, figured by date of events in the book; but it was actually a prequel, published after several other books set in later times. It is really two stories. The first is a naval thriller in the tradition of The Hunt for Red October, although Poyer is a much better writer than Clancy. The second deals with a naval disaster and the resulting board of inquiry and will remind the reader of the last part of The Caine Mutiny. The writing is superb, equal to any writing about the oceans, from Conrad to O'Brien. The reader can almost feel the waves and wind. The characters are vivid and well depicted. The dialogue is great, too.For those who like naval adventure, this is a great book.
