Read Online and Download The Taking of Libbie, SD: A McKenzie Novel (Mac McKenzie series Book 7) by David Housewright. In David Housewright's The Taking of Libbie, SD, a grifter cons an entire town using Mac McKenzie's name, leaving the real McKenzie facing an angry town with nothing left to lose.Rushmore McKenzie is a retired cop, an unexpected millionaire, and an occasional unlicensed private investigator. So, it isn't the biggest surprise in the world when he's attacked and kidnapped from his home—McKenzie has more than a few enemies out there with a grudge against him. But it is a surprise when it turns out his kidnapping is a case of mistaken identity. McKenzie was taken to the small plains town of Libbie, South Dakota which just lost pretty much everything it had to a con man using McKenzie's name. Using a scam involving a new shopping mall, the grifter apparently stole all the money electronically from the bank then disappeared, leaving behind a devastated town full of people with many reasons to hate him. To that list of enemies, he's just added McKenzie who is now determined to help the devastated townspeople, as well as catch and punish the weasel besmirching his reputation.
David Housewright has quietly developed his signature character, Rushmore McKenzie, into one of the most compelling series in the mystery/thriller genre and one that I purchase and read immediately upon publication. McKenzie is a millionaire and former cop who occasionally likes to do "favors" for those in need; however, in "The Taking Of Libbie, SD", McKenzie is forced into action to help himself in a well written enjoyable departure from the six previous McKenzie novels.McKenzie is unceremoniously roughed up and kidnapped from his St. Anthony, Minnesota home in the dead of night by bounty hunters. After a long humiliating ride in the trunk of a car, he is deposited in an interrogation room of the Libbie police department where he suffers further indignities until his captors (the city fathers) realize they have captured the wrong man. It seems a scam artist appropriated McKenzie's name and identity in a scheme to defraud Libbie of a great deal of money that was supposedly to convince investors to build a shopping mall to save the dying community. After the imposter apparently absconded with the community's money, Dewey Miller, the mayor, big mouth, and tyrant of Libbie, hired thugs to track down and return Rushmore McKenzie; unfortunately, they got the real McKenzie, not the imposter.McKenzie, while infuriated by his ordeal, agrees to help find the imposter and the missing money to the relief of some and the consternation of others. Soon he is fending off passes from beautiful women, dealing with a town bully in typical McKenzie fashion, and seeking revenge not only for the townspeople but for his own ignominious treatment. McKenzie in full avenging angel mode is fun to read and things get cloudier with a double murder, several assaults, and finally another kidnapping of McKenzie.David Housewright again skillfully interweaves all these threads into a masterful page-turner that held this reader's interest throughout. It is well plotted, easy to read, and filled with strong characterizations of small town America--both people and beliefs. McKenzie remains a chivalrous knight who has an eye for the truth, a heart of gold, and a short fuse for criminals and bullies. If you have yet to discover Housewright and his McKenzie series, treat yourself to as many of the existing novels as possible---most are very readable as stand alones. "The Taking Of Libbie, SD" is a highly recommended read, as is the entire series.
The favors always get complicated and somehow it always comes out all right. Nina is resigned to his knight to the rescue lifestyle and later steps up to help out. Meanwhile McKenzie is having fun routing out the bad guys...
This book was different than all previous McKenzie books. This one was to help himself for a change.A lot more mystery and drama in book 7. I would recommend it.
Great series with unusual detective
Another good book in this series although it seemed to drag in a few places which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I will keep reading the series.
