Read Online and Download Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief by David Kessler. In this groundbreaking new work, David Kessler—an expert on grief and the coauthor with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross of the iconic On Grief and Grieving—journeys beyond the classic five stages to discover a sixth stage: meaning. In 1969, Elisabeth Kübler Ross first identified the stages of dying in her transformative book On Death and Dying. Decades later, she and David Kessler wrote the classic On Grief and Grieving, introducing the stages of grief with the same transformative pragmatism and compassion. Now, based on hard-earned personal experiences, as well as knowledge and wisdom earned through decades of work with the grieving, Kessler introduces a critical sixth stage. Many people look for “closure†after a loss. Kessler argues that it’s finding meaning beyond the stages of grief most of us are familiar with—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—that can transform grief into a more peaceful and hopeful experience. In this book, Kessler gives readers a roadmap to remembering those who have died with more love than pain; he shows us how to move forward in a way that honors our loved ones. Kessler’s insight is both professional and intensely personal. His journey with grief began when, as a child, he witnessed a mass shooting at the same time his mother was dying. For most of his life, Kessler taught physicians, nurses, counselors, police, and first responders about end of life, trauma, and grief, as well as leading talks and retreats for those experiencing grief. Despite his knowledge, his life was upended by the sudden death of his twenty-one-year-old son. How does the grief expert handle such a tragic loss? He knew he had to find a way through this unexpected, devastating loss, a way that would honor his son. That, ultimately, was the sixth state of grief—meaning. In Finding Meaning, Kessler shares the insights, collective wisdom, and powerful tools that will help those experiencing loss. Finding Meaning is a necessary addition to grief literature and a vital guide to healing from tremendous loss. This is an inspiring, deeply intelligent must-read for anyone looking to journey away from suffering, through loss, and towards meaning.
This is a remarkable book. Given that all of us, unless we die young ourselves, will lose someone close to us, grief is a deep and painful wound that we will have to face. The author, a friend and close associate of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross the late author of Death and Dying, in which she elaborated the now very famous "Five Stages of Grief", has extended his mentor's work to a Sixth Stage --finding meaning. David Kessler's groundbreaking book explores many ways to honor a loss by embracing the uniqueness and value of the person or relationship that is gone. To describe these ways as celebrating, learning from, taking lessons from the person we've lost is to do this subtle and deep work a disservice. It's far more than that. No two losses are the same. David Kessler writes from experience, both as a grief expert and counselor, but also as a man who lost his son to the tragedy of addiction, shortly after the young man's twenty-first birthday. The pain but also the hope, the stoicism but also the humor that flavors these pages provide a comforting guide through our own grief. David Kessler has a wise and kind voice. I lost five people to whom I was very close in the last two years and derived immense comfort and meaning from this book, as well as an insight into my own needs for grieving, and for recovery. Highly, highly recommended.
I’ve just finished reading ‘Finding Meaning’ The sixth stage of griefThank you David the book was so validating.Grief is personal and unique but for all of us that suffer loss, Grief is real. The truth is my grief is real because I lost the person I loved, my son, my husband.I wish I never lost them and I wish I never encountered the grief but I have and in finding meaning I have realised that I would not have wanted to live my life without them. And in knowing that, I would travel this road a thousand times to have had them in my life.In Finding Meaning I’ve come to realise that though Alan and Les have passed; The sun , the clouds, the sky, the rain are all opportunities to build new days, and to reflect on memories past and so it is that as each new day dawns I take them with me into every new day; in sadness and joy but with the greatest love that remains constant in my heart.Remembered each day, somewhere, somehow i share moments that touch our hearts simultaneously and I am reminded that life and death exist as one in eternal love.
I found this book very frustrating. I have read his books before and felt like maybe this book would also be a worthwhile read. But I'm not even all the way through the book and I feel like I want to throw it against the wall. It feels contradictory: grief is important... but... you have to "decide" to heal and accept death and it feels like a dismissal of grief but it felt more offensive to me because it was subversive; cloaked in another message. I was left feeling like he was saying, why grieve? I felt the book was shaming. I can understand why this book might be ok if an old grandpa dies but it's not for me. Then, there was the story about a woman and her "learned helplessness" -- which felt assuming and plain mean- maybe a little more depth there and not as much judging. He spent a substantial portion of the book talking about mental illness or addiction, and I don't understand why its in a book that promoted for grief generally. I don't know if I can finish this book. I'm honestly so disappointed. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless he/she is older and has lost a much older parent; and even then, I'm not sure because so much of the material is irrelevant. Despite that I feel badly about Mr Kesler's own loss, I don't understand all the great ratings. I felt this book tried to hard to push me away from my grief and toward abandoning it. I don't think I would be able to find meaning without grief though.
I wish there were more books like this where grief education is enveloped in hope about the possibility to fully live when we are ready, especially after feeling despair wants to keep us lost in darkness. Although every grief journey is different, I believe the genuine sharing of grief experience and how we can go on as David lovingly expresses, can inspire so many to find their own way after loss. We can feel less alone and an easing of the terror that every second our heartache will always feel the worst. I so much agree with what he says about not having to be destined for eternal pain or controlled by our despair. Our spirit doesn’t have to die when a loved one does. David reminded me of the power I have to tend to my thoughts and well-being so I can feel connection with the love I share whether it’s with someone I cherish in physical form or not. The meaning I made from the death of my loved ones is that being with them again someday in spirit is my eternal life, and how I embrace the experience of love and adventure in this limited human life is in my power to be wonderful. A greatest lesson I have learned about love is how it feels when someone is there for you at the worst of times. I am grateful to have had this book to read on this Thanksgiving. It made me feel alive.
I stumbled upon this beautiful book (not so accidentally, I'm sure) shortly before the anniversary of the birthday of our daughter Caitlin, whom we lost six years ago. Always a challenging day, but made more so this year because it would have been her 30th. David's wise and enormously helpful words reminded me that I really am doing ok, and that when I'm not, I can ask for the help and support--even just acknowledgement, that I deserve. The fact that David was so candid about his experiences after the loss of his son, whose cause of death was similar to my daughter's, was inspirational. I highlighted many passages to re-read, and I'm recommending this lovely book to family and friends.
