Year 9 Dance is a practical and creative subject where students use movement to communicate ideas, emotions and stories. Students develop skills in choreography, performance and critical reflection through practical learning tasks.
Students explore a range of dance styles and cultural influences while building confidence as performers and creators. They learn how to shape movement using the elements of dance (Elements of Dance are Body, Time, Space and Energy. ) to express meaning to an audience.
There are oportunities for practical incursions and excursions.

What will you learn?
In this subject, students will:
Develop technical skills in styles such as contemporary and classical genres.
Create their own original choreography using structured processes
Perform with the intention to develop confidence, control and expressive intention
Analyse dance works using appropriate terminology
Explore cultural and historical contexts, including First Nations perspectives
Learn safe dance practices, body awareness and physical conditioning

Students learn through a variety of practical and engaging experiences:
Dance Technique & Performance
Warm-ups, stretching and fitness training
Learning and performing set choreography
Developing performance skills in Ensemble or troupe and solo work
Choreography & Creativity
Improvisation and movement exploration
Creating dances based on themes or ideas
Ensemble and solo choreography projects
Performance Opportunities
In-class performances and showcases
Collaborative ensemble presentations
Opportunities to perform in school events or community performances\
Responding & Analysis
Watching live or recorded dance performances
Writing creative artistic statements through journalling and formal reflections
Giving and receiving peer feedback
