The Sports Coaching Course provides students with the opportunity to develop practical coaching skills, gain industry knowledge, and work with a variety of sporting and community groups. Throughout the course, students will complete the Sports Trainers qualification, where they will learn the fundamentals of human anatomy, how the body works during physical activity, and how to manage common sports injuries. Students will also develop an understanding of sports safety, including risk management, hazard identification, and workplace health and safety practices within sporting environments.
Students will learn how to design and implement strength and conditioning programs to improve athletic performance and support participant development. A key focus of the course is learning how to coach and communicate effectively with a range of participants, including youth athletes and disadvantaged community groups.
As part of the practical component, students will be required to undertake volunteer work with a local sporting club, where they will assist in teaching and coaching basic sporting skills to junior participants. This hands-on experience will allow students to apply coaching strategies in real-world settings while developing leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.
The course also places a strong emphasis on community engagement. Students will be involved in supporting local sporting and community programs and will have opportunities to undertake additional training and skill development that contribute to the growth and wellbeing of the local community. Through these experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding of the positive impact sport can have on participation, inclusion, and community development.
The course will also include a unit on Ten Pin Bowling, where students will learn the fundamental skills of the sport before planning and delivering coaching sessions to younger students.
Students will have the opportunity to access coaching resources and development programs through organisations such as the AFL and Little Athletics Australia, gaining exposure to a variety of coaching methods and best-practice strategies. These industry links will help students understand what it takes to become an effective coach, mentor, and leader within the sporting community.
This course is ideal for students who enjoy sport, leadership, teamwork, and working with others, and who may be interested in future pathways in coaching, sport and recreation, fitness, physical education, or sports science.
