This Model Making course is for students who would like to develop their skills within the Design and Technology department gaining experiences in producing 3D models in a range of materials. Students will have learning experiences in Design, Plastic, Woodwork and Metalworking projects.
Pupils will be creating basic small-scale models that allow students to develop their motor skills using a range of materials. Pupils will build confidence and independence through support and guidance when using hand tools and machinery. Tasks will be broken down into small sections to allow students to have a deeper understanding of the practical tasks.
Pupils will also gain experience using 3D modelling software, learning how to create simple basic working drawing.
There is scope for specific one to one support and the lessons are tailored to suit the needs of the individual students.
The Course provides opportunities for learners to gain skills in:
3D modelling skills – manual and digital
Cutting, shaping, fixing and joining resistant materials
Developing terminology
LITERACY
Pupils will learn the skills to be able to discuss their work using specific vocabulary. They will be encouraged to research and identify materials, tool names, parts and machine processes.
NUMERACY
Pupils will learn the importance of marking and measuring accurately and develop skills in using the correct equipment to do so either in practical or drawing work. Basic addition and subtraction skills will be taught to support the marking out process.
HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Pupils will learn about the safety of themselves and others when in a workshop environment, learning to assess and manage risk, to protect themselves and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. They are trusted in the workshop and build up confidence using machinery. They have opportunities to personalise and have full ownership over their designs, supporting them in improving self-esteem.

There will be a requirement for pupils to make a contribution of £8 towards the cost of materials and resources used on this course.
Homework will be set on a regular basis as appropriate to support class work.
Grade assessments are done by staff although pupils will be expected to play an active part in formative self and peer assessment.
