What Does God GAVE His Only BEGOTTEN Son TRULY Mean?
***What Does John 3:16 TRULY mean?
Here is John 3:16 from the KJV. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Did God GIVE His ONLY Son called God the Son who never had a BEGINNING to be crucified on the cross for the sins of the world.
Did the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son pre-exist as the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son in the eternity past?
Did God GIVE His only BEGOTTEN HUMAN Son, the Son of MAN, Jesus, to die on the cross for the sins of the world?
In other words, WHEN did the Son of God BECOME the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son of God?
Was the Son of God begotten in the ETERNITY PAST?
Was the Son of God begotten in the WOMB of the Virgin Mary?
Did the Son of MAN, Jesus, become the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son when God RAISED him from the DEAD and gave him eternal life?
When does the Bible ITSELF say that the Son of God was BEGOTTEN?
The Greek word translated as GAVE His Only BEGOTTEN Son ALSO means God RECEIVED His Only BEGOTTEN Son.
So then, could the God INTENDED meaning of John 3:16 be, God so loved the world that He RECEIVED His only BEGOTTEN Son up into heaven AFTER the cross and resurrection to be seated at His side to be MADE both Lord and Christ, according to Acts 2:36?

God’s HUMAN Son was GIVEN to Die on the Cross!
WHEN was the Son of God BEGOTTEN?
Was the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son RECEIVED or GIVEN?
Did God GIVE His ONLY Son called God the Son to be crucified on the cross for the sins of the world.
Did the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son pre-exist as the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son?
In other words, was the Son of God begotten in the ETERNITY PAST?
Who died on the cross for the sins of the world? There are no less than five choices that Christians teach as to WHO died on the cross for the sins of the world.
Obviously, all Christians agree that it was Jesus who died on the cross, but they DISAGREE as to WHO Jesus truly is.
Let me explain what I mean by listing the five main teachings among Christians concerning the meaning of the phrase “God GAVE His ONLY BEGOTTEN Son” found in John 3:16.
I will list them in no particular order. But first let us read this controversial verse of Scripture.
John 3:16-21.
“For God so loved the world, that He GAVE His ONLY BEGOTTEN Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17. For God SENT not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes NOT is condemned already, because he has NOT believed in the NAME of the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son of God.
John 3:19. And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (The word “EVIL” in the Bible simply means not BELIEVING God to do things God’s WAY. God told the children of Israel to go and possess the land, but they disobeyed what God said to do.
Instead of doing what God said, they sent 12 spies to see if it was POSSIBLE to possess the land. Ten spies came back with an EVIL report saying that it is impossible to do what God said to do.
And the TWO spies who BELIEVED God over the EVIDENCE of what they SAW said, Yahweh is WITH us and we can and we will take the land)
John 3:20. For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. (The light is the teachings of Jesus that God put in his mouth to teach the people.
The light was prophesied to come in Genesis 1:3,4, when God said, Let there be light and God saw the Aleph Tav Messiah Jesus light that it was good.
The Aleph Tav, the first and the last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, are not translated. The light coming into the world of filled with darkness and evil is a hidden prophecy of the Messiah Jesus)
John 3:21. But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
#1. The Triniatarian interpretation of John 3:16.
Trinitarian Christians “interpret” John 3:16,17 as God sending down God the Son who had NO BEGINNING to become flesh.
And they believe that the ONLY BEGOTTEN God the Son died on the cross for the sins of the world.
And some argue that if you do not believe that God HIMSELF died on the cross for your sins, then you will remain dead in your sins.
#1. WHY the Triniatarian interpretation of John 3:16 is in ERROR!
The word “begotten” means that the Son of God has a BEGINNING, a time when he came into existence to become the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son of God.
The Greek word translated as “GAVE” also means “BROUGHT FORTH”.
And the CONTEXT in John 3:1-15 teaches us about being BORN of God and the Son of MAN being lifted up on the cross to die for the sins of the world.
So to me, the TRUE SOUND Biblical meaning of the phrase “God GAVE His ONLY BEGOTTEN Son” should be understood as God brought forth His FIRSTBORN Son into GLORY.
And the Son that God SENT into the world was His HUMAN Son who was miraculously conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary just like it was PROPHESIED to happen.
And whosoever believes in the REGENERATED human Son of God from the DEAD never to die again shall NOT perish, but ALSO be given eternal life.
And whosoever who does NOT BELIEVE that God resurrected His the Son of MAN from the dead and GAVE him the divine nature of immortality will PERISH in the lake of fire on the final Day of Judgment.
#2. The Oneness Pentecostal interpretation of John 3:16.
The Oneness Pentecostal Christians believe that Almighty God the Father HIMSELF died on the cross for the sins of the world.
And they also dogmatically demand that if you do not believe that Almighty God Himself died on the cross, then you will remain dead in your sins.
#2. WHY the Oneness Pentecostal interpretation of John 3:16 is in ERROR!
The word of God says that he SENT His Son. It does not say that God Himself came down from heaven and manifested HIMSELF to BECOME flesh.
God Himself does not need to be JUSTIFIED. It was the human Son of God who was justified to be manifested to become a God under and subject to his God whom God SET on His throne at His right hand side, UNTIL God puts all of the ENEMIES under his feet.
The BODY that God PREPARED for His Son was the GLORIFIED immortal body that He prepared for His HUMAN Son.
#3. The “Reformed” Trinitarian interpretation of John 3:16.
The “Reformed” Trinitarian Christians are former or ex-Trinitarian Christians who REDEFINE the Godhead Trinity doctrine because they now know and understand that the Son of God had a BEGINNING and that the Father is GREATER than His Son.
And they “interpret” the Son of God as being begotten in the eternity past as God the Son who was under and subject to God the Father.
And the Holy Spirit is under and subject to both the Father and God the Son.
And to them, God SENT God the Son, His ONLY BEGOTTEN Son, down from heaven to BECOME flesh.
#1. WHY the “Reformed” Triniatarian interpretation of John 3:16 is in ERROR!
As you can see by what they believe, they still cling to the THREE separate persons in the ONE God theory.
I say “theory” because the Bible ITSELF never describes God as being three separate persons in one God.
But rather, the Scriptures clearly define the FATHER as being the ONLY TRUE God.
The word “BEGOTTEN” is Strong’s number G1080 and it means REGENERATED.
Simply go to BlueLetter.org and type in G1080 in the search box to find all of the verses of Scriptures that have the Greek word “gennaō” in them.
And you will see that EVERY verse teaches about being REGENERATED by the word of God to become a NEW CREATION of God.
So why would God BEGET or REGENERATE God the Son in the ETERNITY PAST? NO! All of the Scriptures teach us that the Son of MAN was BEGOTTEN on the DAY that God RESURRECTED or BROUGHT FORTH to Son of MAN from the DEAD and RECEIVED him up into heaven.
And that very same day in the evening, the now GLORIFIED Son of MAN descended back down from heaven to show himself ALIVE for forty days before ascending back into heaven where he was BEFORE just forty days earlier.
#4. The Jehovah’s Witness interpretation of John 3:16.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses also teach that the Son of God was begotten in the eternity past and then the Son in the “office” as the Word helped God create all things.
However, they do NOT believe that Jesus is God Himself, but yet they teach that the Son who helped God CREATE all things BECAME the Son of God.
#4. WHY the Jehovah’s Witness interpretation of John 3:16 is in ERROR!
The CONTEXT in Colossians 1:15-17 is speaking of the ALL who BELIEVE in Jesus to be made as NEW CREATURES created in Jesus ANOINTED.
And thus, Jesus is the FIRSTBORN of every NEW CREATURE made in the IMAGE of the unseen God.
The English word “THINGS” is NOT in the original Greek text. In other words, there is no Greek word in the original Greek text that can be translated as the English word “things” in Colossians 1:16,17.
And the Greek word “dia” translated as “by” him were created; all “things” also means “in” him was the all created.
In other words, the ALL who believe were created by God INTO the BODY of Jesus Christ, the church.
And Jesus is the BEGINNING of God’s CREATION by becoming the FIRSTBORN from the DEAD, the FIRSTBORN among many BRETHREN, the FIRSTBORN of every CREATURE made in the IMAGE of the unseen God who ALONE in the Father.
#5. The Biblical Unitarian interpretation of John 3:16.
The Biblical Unitarian Christians believe that the Son of God did NOT pre-exist in the eternity past.
We believe that the Son of God is the FULFILLMENT of the word of God which God SPOKE out from His MOUTH and then PERFORMED His own spoken word of PROPHECY.
And thus, we believe that the word made FLESH literally means the written and spoken word of God became the HUMAN Son of God called the Son of MAN.
We believe that the Son of MAN was lifted up on the cross to die for the sins of the whole world.
And we believe that the Son of MAN BECAME the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son of God after the cross and resurrection.
Therefore, we interpret John 3:16 as John’s written RECORD of a past event that happened WHEN God raised up or BROUGHT FORTH His HUMAN Son back from the GRAVE and gave the Son of MAN the divine nature of eternal life.
#5. WHY the Biblical Unitarian interpretation of John 3:16 is the ONLY true SOUND Biblical interpretation that AGREES will ALL of the Scriptures!
Here is a short answer for WHY the Biblical Unitarian interpretation of the phrase “God GAVE His ONLY BEGOTTEN Son”.
God RECEIVED His HUMAN Son whom He begot from the DEAD and GLORIFIED.
This is the ONLY SOUND Biblical interpretation that does NOT CONTRADICT any other verse of Scripture in the entire Bible when the Scriptures are correctly TRANSLATED and correctly INTERPRETED.
Now that you have seen all of the main interpretations of John 3:16,17, let us look at how the concordance in E-Sword defines the Greek word “didōmi” in verse 16.

A prolonged form of a primary verb (which is used as an alternate in most of the tenses); to give (used in a very wide application, properly or by implication, literally or figuratively; greatly modified by the connection): - adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+ with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.
God MADE His only begotten Son by DELIVERING up His human Son from Hell to BRING FORTH His created human Son from the dead and RECEIVE him into heaven.
And when we truly understand that it was the Son of MAN that was BEGOTTEN by God at the RESURRECTION, then you can see why the gospels record the events of Jesus in the PAST tense.
For example, Matthew 1:18 says, “The BIRTH of Jesus Christ was on this wise” or the BIRTH of Jesus ANOINTED happened in this way.
The Son of God was not given that NAME Jesus until after he was born.
And even that Son of God was not ANOINTED until his baptism in the River Jordan by John the Baptist.
So why did Matthew say the birth of “Jesus Christ” happened in this way when a SON was BORN?
It is because that is the way we talk about events that have already happened.
The Son who was born BECAME known as Jesus Christ.
There was no “ANOINTED Son of God” in the eternity past.
And in the same way, there was NO ONLY BEGOTTEN Son in the eternity past.
But rather, the HUMAN Son of MAN, Jesus, was BEGOTTEN or REGENERATED to BECOME the GLORIFIED eternal Son of God at the RESURRECTION.
And the disciples of Jesus referred to the RESURRECTION of the human Son of God as being the ONLY BEGOTTEN Son.
Please read Acts 13:29-41.
“And when they had FULFILLED all that was written of him, (Behold, I COME in the volume of Your BOOK, according to Psalm) they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulcher.
Acts 13:30. But God raised him from the dead: (The CHILD who was BORN, the Son who was GIVEN whose NAME shall be called the mighty God WHEN the government is laid upon his shoulders)
Acts 13:31. And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. (Speaking of the forty days AFTER the cross and resurrection, the very DAY that the Son of MAN, Jesus, was GLORIFIED and given his new immortal BODY that God PREPARED for him, according to Hebrews 10:5)
Acts 13:32. And we (The eyewitnesses of Jesus) declare unto you glad tidings, (Or the good news or the TRUE gospel of Jesus Christ) how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
Acts 13:33. God has FULFILLED the same unto us their children, in THAT He has RAISED UP Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, You are My Son, THIS DAY have I BEGOTTEN you. (Or on this day that I resurrected you, I have REGENERATED you)
Acts 13:34. And as concerning that He raised him up from the DEAD, NOW no more to return to corruption, (In other words, God gave His human Son a new glorified IMMORTAL body of flesh and bones that God PREPARED for his Messiah) He said on this wise, I will GIVE you the sure mercies of David.
Acts 13:35. Wherefore, he (David the prophet) said also in another psalm, You shall not suffer Your Holy One to see corruption. (And Hosea 11:9 makes it BLATANTLY clear the God is NOT the MAN, the Holy One in the midst of you)
Acts 13:36. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:
Acts 13:37. But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. (And, according to John 3:14, the CONTEXT of John 3:16, it was the Son of MAN who was lifted up on the cross to die for the sins of the world)
Acts 13:38. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this MAN (Whom God REGENERATED, the ONLY REGENERATED Son of God) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
Acts 13:39. And by him (Or in him or because of him) all that believe are justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Acts 13:40. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;
Acts 13:41. Behold, you despisers, and wonder, and perish: (And some Christians DESPISED the teaching of Biblical Unitarian Christians that a MAN suffered and died of the cross for the sins of the world. Some WONDER, how can a MAN die for the sins of other men?) for I work a work in your days, a work which you shall in no wise believe, though a MAN declares it unto you.”
Nowhere in the entire Bible is Jesus referred to as “God the Son”.
And nowhere in the entire Bible is Jesus described as a so-called God/man having TWO natures at the SAME time DURING the days of his FLESH, one divine and one human.
But rather, the Apostles saw or understood Jesus to be the HUMAN Son of God made a little LOWER than the angels during the days of his FLESH.
And then his God and Father CROWNED his human Son with GLORY and honor to RECEIVE power to be SET on the throne of Yahweh UNTIL God puts all His ENEMIES unto the feet of His Lord and King whom He Himself MADE both Lord and Christ AFTER the cross and resurrection, according to Acts 2:36.
So then, God CREATED ALL of mankind to RECEIVE GLORY and power, but ALL men have fallen SHORT of that glory.
And in the next chapter of this “Book 6 WHY God Created us!” we will cover why all men have fallen SHORT of the GLORY of God and HOW to be SURE that you will RECEIVE the SAME GLORY that God GAVE to His human Son, Jesus. So I implore you to read B-6 Ch9 Did we INHERIT a Sinful NATURE?
