Exempt Employees Teaching

Continuing Pilot Program Regarding Compensation for Full-Time Exempt Staff Teaching a Course in a Degree Program.  This program applies to full-time exempt staff in regular and staff term appointments.

Eligibility for Teaching in a Degree Program. In order to teach a course in a degree program, the staff person must have the appropriate credentials for the content and level of the course (relevant advanced degree and professional experience).

Definition of Teaching. Full-time exempt staff may be considered to be teaching if they are listed as the faculty of record, generate and implement a syllabus, lead rather than support the majority of class or studio sessions in a course, grade the students’ performance, and are subject to student evaluations.

Process

1.      A department head or Dean may invite a full-time exempt staff member to teach.

2.      The department/division coordinator initiates the Add Job process in Workday for the person invited to teach.

3.      The supervisor will receive in their Workday inbox an Additional Assignment Request form for their staff member (a sample is attached to this page). The supervisor and staff member are responsible for completing the form which facilitates discussion about the potential impact to their home department and primary position responsibilities.  Supervisors should discuss strategies to meet the home department expectations during the period in question.

o   Note: At any time throughout the approval process, the staff member’s supervisor is encouraged to consult with the hiring department head or dean.

4. The supervisor approves or denies the request and uploads the form to Workday.

5.  Human Resources reviews the request.

6. The Dean approves or denies the request.

7. Academic Affairs contracts approved requests.

Eligibility for additional compensation. Full-time exempt staff in regular and term appointments assigned to teach a 3-credit course in a degree program are eligible for additional compensation. Staff at a grade level of 7/AD and above or those who hold term appointments with similar level of responsibility are ineligible for additional compensation. Staff at grades below 7/AD who have responsibilities that meet the definition of teaching as part of their essential functions are also ineligible for additional compensation.

Compensation.  Teaching a 3-credit course: Stipend (flat rate) of $5750 (equivalent to base pay established in Part-time Faculty Bargaining Agreement)

Guidelines for maximum teaching workload for FT exempt staff:  2 courses per year (no more than one course per fall and spring semester); no more than 2 students in tutorial situations (ISP, CSP, Thesis Advisees).

Like for all new adjunct faculty, when initiating the Add Job process the department should submit the cv and documentation (Course Proposal, Course Section/Revision or Staffing Form) about what course the staff member will be assigned to teach.
