Stipends to faculty and other exempt RISD employees

Degree program Part-time faculty must be paid for all work above and beyond prepping for, teaching, and evaluating the students in their courses. During the school year they are paid for serving as a guest critic, substitute and other extra work under $1000 on a monthly stipend spreadsheet collaboratively maintained by Academic Affairs and the academic coordinators of academic departments across campus. Faculty who invite part-time faculty to serve as guest lecturers or critics in their courses should provide their department's academic coordinator regarding date of activity and type of activity so that payment may be arranged. These Ad-Hoc payments for types of activities are consistent with honoraria for non-employees but are processed on the monthly payroll which is distributed on the 20th of each month.

All academic department administrative coordinators are shared into the stipend spreadsheets for each month of the current fiscal/academic year and add the relevant information listed below. Non-academic departments on campus may request to be shared into the monthly spreadsheet for any month by emailing a request to Margaret Lewis mlewis@risd.edu and will be asked to fill in the information listed below:

date of activity

thumbnail description of the activity

date of activity and number of hours worked

Cost Center to be charged (please note: all stipends to adjuncts will be charged to activity code 50301)

amount of payment

number of payments

More substantial work and summer assignments must be contracted by Academic Affairs and can only be initiated by department heads and/or Deans by completing and signing the Extra Duty Contract Form. The information on the Form provides Academic Affairs with detailed information regarding expectations or deliverables, time frame, stipend amount, number of hours to be worked, and Cost Center to be charged. Academic Affairs will send the faculty member a contract and arrange payment.

Degree program Full-time faculty are NOT paid additional stipends during the year for activities such as serving as guest critic with very few exceptions. They can be paid by the Museum for providing a lecture or demonstration (which is not part of the degree program instructional universe) or if RISD is in the intermediary for a consultancy or the fiscal sponsor for the faculty member’s grant. However, department heads work as needed during the summer to make adjunct hires, provide staff guidance, etc.: their department head stipend covers this occasional duty. Likewise Graduate Program Directors work as needed during the summer to assign assistantships and prepare for the start of the new school year.

FT faculty can and must be paid for summer work and can be added to the monthly stipend spreadsheet for incidental work such as committee service. By agreement with FTFA, the day rate for summer committee work is $500 per day.

For more substantial summer work such as teaching degree program courses, leading funded research, or other special projects, they are issued contracts by Academic Affairs for summer work. Work unrelated to teaching degree program courses must be contracted by Academic Affairs and can only be initiated by department heads and/or Deans by completing and signing the Extra Duty Contract Form. The information on the Form provides Academic Affairs with detailed information regarding expectations or deliverables, time frame, stipend amount, number of hours to be worked, and Cost Center to be charged. Academic Affairs will send the faculty member a contract and arrange payment.
