Performance management is a continuous, shared process between a manager and an employee designed to assist people to develop to their full potential, thereby increasing organizational effectiveness.
Our process emphasizes the importance of employee engagement and professional development as one of the many ways we can achieve optimal work performance and job satisfaction. RISD’s staff members are critical to carrying out our commitment to organizational excellence and to delivering on our mission of providing exemplary art and design education. The performance management process at RISD is designed to further the knowledge, skills, and abilities of each staff member through enhanced communication between employees and managers regarding expectations, process, and performance.
Performance Management is about more than completing annual forms. It is a process that consists of a number of informal activities such as continuous dialogue throughout the year, where employee and manager regularly connect to discuss goals, objectives, development, and results in meaningful and productive ways, and formal activities including a Mid-Year Check-In and Annual Evaluation. Ultimately these activities:
Tie individual performance to RISD’s institutional objectives
Align individual performance with department’s expectations and needs
Promote partnership between a manager and employee
Develop skills and competencies for current and/or future jobs
