The Brown|RISD Dual Degree is an undergraduate academic program that allows students to complete, concurrently, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University. The highly selective program is available to a small number of students, who are admitted separately to each institution, as well as approved by a joint Brown|RISD Admission Committee. More information about the program’s history and framework can be found at the Brown |RISD Dual Degree Program website.

Brown/RISD Dual Degree Advising

It is essential for students to work closely with their academic advisors on planning and scheduling issues from the very beginning of the program. Students in the Dual Degree program are advised by the Assistant Director, who works jointly with Brown and RISD on issues related to students’ academic and residential experience, as well as assigned faculty advisors on each campus.

The completion of the Dual Degree involves fulfilling the degree requirements for both Brown and RISD in an accelerated fashion. During Year One, students are assigned an Experimental & Foundation Studies faculty advisor at RISD. They will also meet with the Dual Degree Academic Advisor to discuss their overall academic plan.

In preparation for declaring a major at RISD (Year Two) and a concentration at Brown (Year Three), students work with the Dual Degree Assistant Director and faculty advisors at RISD and Brown to develop a year-by-year description of their planned coursework. Once this plan is approved, students work with their major and concentration faculty advisors, along with the Dual Degree Assistant Director, to coordinate scheduling and registration for classes and assure completion of all graduation requirements at both schools, as well as a Capstone requirement specific to the program.
