Museum Board of Governors

The Museum Board of Governors provides oversight of The RISD Museum on behalf of RISD’s Board of Trustees and assists and supports the Museum in fulfilling its mission to acquire, preserve, exhibit, and interpret works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its strong integration with RISD’s academic program, the Museum brings together, educates, and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications. The Board of Trustees delegates to the Board of Governors the authority and the responsibility, subject to general Board of Trustees oversight, to:

· Provide general guidance to and oversight of the Museum, its operations, its finances, and its programmatic and collections-related policies and initiatives.

· Advise the Board of Trustees on the appointment of the Chair of the Board of Governors.

· Advise the Chair of the Board of Governors on the Chair’s appointment, removal, and performance evaluation of the Museum Director.

· Advocate on behalf of the Museum and represent it at the local, state, and national levels.

· Represent a diverse variety of community perspectives to the Museum.

· Support the Museum’s development efforts both by assisting in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individuals, corporations, foundations, and others who may offer support to the Museum and by providing an individually appropriate amount of personal support each year.

· Support College-Museum relations and communications.

· Recommend appropriate annual budgets and other actions for consideration by the Board of Trustees and provide other communications so that the Board of Trustees is appropriately apprised of Museum operations, policies, and initiatives.

The Board of Trustees retains ultimate fiduciary responsibility for governance of RISD, including the College and the Museum.
