Reading Program

Read Across SD

Dear Parents:

“Read Across SD” is the 2016-17 theme.

In accordance with the Faulkton Area School District’s Advanced Ed. goal of enhanced reading performance, each nine weeks students in the elementary grades 1-6 will be required to complete individual reading as part of their reading quarter grade.

Students will be taking a reading test called Star when school begins. This test will help set the appropriate reading level for students based on their abilities. Individual goals will be set each nine weeks for each student. They will need to choose books from the reading level set after completing the Star Test. Teachers will inform you of your child’s goal and reading level. Grades will be assigned according to the percentage reached of the goal that was set for your child for the nine weeks. Students will take the Star test each nine weeks and new goals will be set.

Students may continue to read above their required goal if they wish (but not required), and those that earn 100 points or more will earn a special award. The more your child reads, the better reader they will become.

Students in Kindergarten will continue to read minutes. Their goal for the end of the year is 2000 minutes. If they meet this goal, they will receive a certificate at the end of the year.

All tests must be taken at school. The availability of an Internet program means that our district will have access to all tests that have been created through this program. This does not mean that all books have an Accelerated Reader Test attached to them, but it does mean that all books that do have a created test will be available to our students. It also allows students to read books from home, eBooks, or books from the Faulk County Library that are on the book test list.

You will want to make sure that your child’s book choices are on the list by clicking on AR Book Find under the AR Testing Tab and search for the title. This link is on the Faulkton school home page http://faulkton.k12.sd.us . This link will also tell you the reading level of the book so that you can make sure it is in the level assigned to your child.

You will be receiving a letter on how to access Renaissance Home Connect. This allows you to keep track of what your child has tested on and the score they received. It also allows you to receive emails when your child takes a test. This letter will also contain your child’s username and password to log in.

If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher.
